This incredible video highlights 70 years of South Indian heroines
When you want to do 70 years of South Indian film heroines justice, you have to make sure the right team is in place. Luckily, this video does just that. According to Buzzfeed, Enna Da Rascalas teamed up with SuperPrincessjo to bring 70 years of iconic South Indian actresses to life.
This is a cause near and dear to Enna Da Rascalas, a comedy collective dedicated to breaking stereotypes that exist about Southern India and its inhabitants. Their video to this effect, “South of India,” is set to Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” and has over 1.5 million views on YouTube.
SuperPrincessjo was the natural partner for the endeavor—the YouTube beauty expert covers everything from DIY face-masks to henna tutorials to, you guessed it: celebrity make-up tutorials. They joined forces to create the video, which chronicles the history of South India’s film stars in under three minutes.
It begins with iconic actress Padmini, who appeared in over 250 films throughout a career that spanned nearly her entire 74-year-long life. The video also shows Jayalaitha, a ’70s actress who transitioned into politics and whom the BBC has described as “one of India’s most colorful and controversial politicians.”
Finally, the last heroine showcased is Trisha Krishnan, popular known simply as Trisha, a current working actress with several films out this year.
Not only is the scope of the project impressive, it also allows viewers to see how some beauty trends were firmly entrenched in India, while in other cases, popular styles were influenced by the outside world. This is most noticeable in the ’60s, when previously elaborate braids and hairpieces gave way to the sleek bouffant styles that were popular in Europe and the United States.
SuperPrincessjo also gives viewers a sense of the personality of each star, glancing at the camera shyly, laughing, or blinking seductively. This way, not only do the beauty trends of the day come through—so does the spirit of each individual actress.
As Buzzfeed’s Sahil Rizwan concludes, “This video gets it just right.” We couldn’t agree more, and are excited to see what Enna Da Rascalas, and Superprincessjo, come up with next.
