7 Underrated Supernatural Love Stories

It’s February, and even though Valentine’s Day is only celebrated for one day, love is swirling through the air all month-long. It doesn’t matter if you’re single, married, or in the midst of an angst-filled love triangle, we can all appreciate a beautiful love story when we hear one.

So in honor of all the ‘X’s and ‘O’s we’re sending to each other, let’s talk about some of the best love stories of all time. More specifically – fictional supernatural love stories. I prefer to spend the bulk of my time in the fictional world rather than reality, because fictional love really knows no bounds, laws, or regular human restrictions. But I have no interest in celebrating the predictable supe fairy tales. We’ve all had more than our fair share of Edward/Bella/Jacob discussions, haven’t we? Let’s dish on the underrated couples who are adorably matched, and had to fight through time, space, and creatures from many different species in order to be together. (Including the story of Roth and Layla – demon and gargoyle who have to battle other terrifying monsters from the depths of Hell to not only be together, but also to save the world. Enter our giveaway below and you could win a free copy of the book!)

Also, this is not a recap of the best romantic storylines from the show, Supernatural. Just to avoid any confusion.

Here are seven underrated supernatural love stories that’ll make you believe in love, long after February ends.

1. Sookie and Quinn – The Sookie Stackhouse series

No, not True Blood. This was a character from the books by Charlaine Harris that the show’s creators unfortunately left out. Quinn is a Tiger, you guys. A giant sexy tiger that looks like a tan body builder with a shaved head and purple eyes in his human form. Everybody is all, “Team Eric!” “Team Bill!” “Team Alcide!” Seriously, read the books if you haven’t already because Quinn is the bee’s knees.

If the show included Quinn, maybe they wouldn’t be entering their final season right now. YEAH, I SAID IT.

2. Zoe and Kyle/Tate and Violet – American Horror Story

Keep in mind, it’s a couple on AHS, which means they face some messed up circumstances in order to be together. Tate was a murderer-turned-ghost in the first season, and in the third season, Zoe is a witch who turns Kyle into a modern Frankenstein. But still, it’s the chemistry between these two actors that I’m repeatedly sucked into. Whatever form you crazy kids take next, I will blindly support as long as you’re together.

3. Layla and Roth – White Hot Kiss (WHICH JUST MADE THE #10 SPOT ON THE NYT BEST SELLER LIST!!)

Layla might look like an ordinary teenage girl, but she’s actually a teenage demon/gargoyle hybrid – which is extremely rare, since gargoyles protect humankind from the evil acts of demons. She was raised by gargoyles, or “Wardens” and has the ability to spot demons in a way that no one else can. Using this skill, she helps her family of Wardens track down demons and send them right back to Hell where they belong.

But there’s one demon she has no interest in sending away. Roth. He’s gorgeous. In fact, take the most swoon-worthy human man and multiply his beauty by a thousand. That’s Roth. He seems a little dangerous but very protective of her, and has a giant snake tattoo that comes to life and fights off any approaching predators.

As compelling as the paranormal details in this book are, it’s the characters’ emotional journey that makes White Hot Kiss a universally appealing read. Layla has no concept of the true extent of her own powers as half-demon, half-gargoyle. Just that she needs to hide her demon side completely, as it’s considered wrong and evil. As a demon himself, Roth guides her in harnessing her inner strength and learning to be proud of who and what she is. Their growing feelings for each other are as relatable as the first time you fell in love yourself. This is a romance that you’ll instantly ship, and you’ll never want it to end.

Oh, Jennifer L. Armentrout, what have you done to me? Cannot wait for book two!

4. Khaleesi and anyone – Game of Thrones

I know her name is Daenerys Targaryen, but that’s not as much fun to say. I’m also not convinced I’d pronounce it correctly, so I’ll just stick with her title, “Khaleesi.” I was completely obsessed with her relationship with Khal, and then her love for her people, and then her bond with her dragon children, her trust in her #2 guy, and now the chemistry between her and the hunky new guard, AND her bestie bond with her translator. Anyone she chooses to love is extremely lucky to have her. And I’m pretty sure they know it.

5. Rhiannon and A – Every Day

Rhiannon is just a normal teenage girl. A is a beautiful soul that wakes up in a different body each morning. This sounds crazy, right? I’m pretty sure only David Levithan could take such a complicated idea and turn it into a timeless love story. Since A occupies each body for only a day, he/she has no designated gender, and does his/her best to leave the lives of these people better, or at least the same, as they were before his/her arrival. It’s a powerful story. One you will never ever forget.

6. Adam and Barbara – Beetlejuice

A cute couple, but also a couple of squares, Adam and Barbara lived a simple life. But then they died and returned to their home as trapped ghosts. Never able to take a step outside the front door. While the idea of sharing my home with strangers is my nightmare, the idea of spending eternity with my one and only in our home sounds like the ultimate dream. I hope they get Netflix up in the attic. #Heaven

7. Julie and R – Warm Bodies

I feel like this book and movie came out in the midst of major paranormal movie and book franchises and were not given the full credit that they deserved. This is a story of a zombie who falls in love with a human. But the story is from HIS POV! Guys, that’s genius! He doesn’t remember anything about his human life. He thinks his name started with an ‘R’, so that’s what he calls himself.

R takes care of Julie when she’s stuck in an area filled with zombies (okay, fine. He kinda kidnapped her first), but as she starts to trust him, their bond sets off a major change in R and zombies everywhere.

P.S. – In the movie, R is played by Nicholas Hoult, aka Jennifer Lawrence’s BF, and he’s absolutely adorable.

How much do you love love right now?! xoxoxoxo

One kiss could be the last

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she’s anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.
Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most.

When a tattooed, sinfully hot demon appears and claims he knows her secrets, Layla finds herself tempted by the forbidden. But trusting him could mean betraying the family that raised her. Worse yet, it could mean a ticket to the end of the world…
