Ariana Grande teased the hidden meaning behind “7 rings,” and it could involve Pete Davidson
Ariana Grande has been teasing her next single, “7 Rings,” for what feels like years (we know, we know—it’s only technically been a few weeks). After dropping the song title in her “Thank U, Next” video (it served as “Elle Woods’” vanity plate number), the singer revealed the inspiration behind the song in a December 1st tweet. She noted that it all started when she and some friends had a little “too much champagne” and headed to Tiffany’s.

“twas a pretty rough day in nyc,” she wrote. This could admittedly have a lot of meanings, because it’s been a tumultuous year for the singer—but there’s a chance the “rough day” was related to her breakup with SNL star Pete Davidson. There’s also a chance she’s referring to the loss of her ex-boyfriend Mac Miller…or perhaps it was something unrelated to either.
Grande and her besties have been seen sporting matching rings for a while now, so it also seems that while “Thank U, Next” was about coming to terms with past relationships, and the subsequent single “Imagine” covered still dealing with the pain, “7 Rings” may be more about friendship. And if so, we’re 100% down.

And in a January 10th tweet, Ariana revealed that “7 Rings” will grace our ears on January 18th. As in, eight days from now.

Excuse us while we listen to “Thank U, Next” (as well as the entire Sweetener album) while we wait.
