6 Awesome Things About Amy Poehler’s New Book

If you’re not a fan of pre-ordering, make sure to mark October 28th on your calendar, and circle it twice. It’s the day when Amy Poehler’s much-anticipated book, ‘Yes Please’, hits the stores. There’s no doubt about it that Amy’s memoirs will be a must-read this fall, because Amy is a talented lady with a lot of great advice to dish out. The cover of the book was recently released, and personally, I’m glad that it won’t scare my father the way that Tina Fey’s ‘Bossypants’ cover did. (I literally had to cover the image to get him to read it, and we both finally learned the true meaning of the phrase “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”) You can’t go wrong with Amy, surrounded by colorful neon lights.

The best part about the book is, it’s kind of a mystery. Even when the book was first announced, not too much was revealed about what it’d contain. Pictures? Probably. Hand-drawn pictures? Hopefully. Information about her years on SNL? We sure hope that she didn’t let Tina take all of the good behind-the-scenes stories! (And a few Parks & Recreation stories wouldn’t hurt, either.)

Here’s what we do know for sure.

1. Amy’s book was described by publisher It Books as “an illustrated, nonlinear diary full of humor and honesty and brimming with true stories, fictional anecdotes and life lessons.”

Does that mean that she’s going to go back and forth with stories? Fun! Maybe she’ll start on page 141, like Paul Reiser did with ‘Couplehood’.

2. The book was inspired by Amy’s goal in helping young women navigate the adult world.

We’ve mentioned Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls numerous times before, it’s a great source for amazing advice. Amy has proven time and time again that she really cares a lot about the well being of young women.

I can’t even imagine what it’d be like if ‘Yes Please’ came out when I was a teenager — it probably never would have left my book-bag. It’d reek of highlighters, and I’d probably lend it to my friends, after creating a spiral-note contract with them which stated that I’d get it back in pristine condition.

3. Amy loves books – and even signed up for World Book Night this year. 

When you’re a fan of reading, and treasure the art of writing, you don’t write solely for the paycheck. This past April, Amy was a chairperson for World Book Night, which annually creates a list of books that members of the public receive, and hand out throughout their communities. Royalties are waived, and the pure love of literature takes full control.

“I grew up loving books,” Amy said. “In today’s digital world, it’s more important than ever to know how it feels to have a good book in your hands… People who read are people who dream, and we connect through the stories we live and tell and read.”

That sentence almost made me tear up.

4. She’ll be the 6th SNL Cast Member to Write An Autobiographical Book

Amy’s fellow SNL alum have stepped up to write absolutely amazing and heartfelt books, so she’s in an elite category.

Not only did ‘Bossypants’ hit it big, but Rachel Dratch and Darrell Hammond wrote stunning books as well. And let’s not forget that while Sarah Silverman and Jay Mohr were only on the show for a brief period, they’ve gone on to pen books about their comedic experiences.

5. In a statement, It Books editor Carrie Thornton said she was “blown away by [Poehler’s] creativity and her passion.”

One of the best things for a writer is having a staff that supports you fully. Over at It Books, Carrie Thornton won’t ever hide the fact that she (like us) is a big Poehler fan. When people go out of their way to support you, you know you have something good.

But most importantly?

6. It’s Amy Poehler. She’s talented enough to write a poem on a toilet paper square, and have it be thoughtful and inspiring.
