6 jobs your bestie actually does every day
It’s easy to take for granted the many ways a bestie can impact our lives. I’m guilty of relying on my own BFF for too much and not thanking her enough for it. The fact of the matter is, when you have someone that can listen to you without judgment, be there for you whenever you need her, and make you laugh with just a look, you haven’t just found a friend, you’ve found a lifelong love. After all, a bestie can sometimes act as your therapist, life coach, stylist, and dating guru all within the same conversation. So here’s to the best girlfriends in our lives, and the many roles they play.
Your BFF is also an expert translator
Luckily, I don’t need to explain my hyperbolic statements to my BFF. For example, she knows I’m not being literal when I say I waited in line for 100 hours or that something is literally the worst. She doesn’t question when I say gruel because I was trying to say “cool” and “great” at the same time a la Mean Girls, or wince at my terrible impressions. She gets my drift and doesn’t misinterpret much, and for that I am so thankful. Besties also have a way of speaking their own special language. When you say your secret code word at a party (FUNIONS) she knows you want to split.
They act as your crisis management system.
Ok, so your bestie isn’t a licensed professional therapist. (If you’re having trouble, it’s always a good idea to reach out to one of those instead of just your BFF.) And it’s not a good idea to call them up ten times a day whenever you have a potential problem. But let’s face it: no one’s as good in a crisis as your bestie. When you’re faced with a hard decision, needing a shoulder to cry on, or even a little tough love, a friend that knows you better than you know yourself is indispensable. She knows your very particular fears (going to the dentist, being stuck in an elevator) and what to say to get you through those experiences. Sometimes, she kills the centipede that looks like it crawled out of the prehistoric era—without flinching.
Your bestie is the best matchmaker
Even if your bestie doesn’t set you up with someone, they always seem to know when something’s built to last or not worth a second date. She can tell when you’re super into someone or when a date will be “meh” often before you can. You trust her with your wifi password, your bank account, and sometimes even your tindr profile, and no dating mishap is too embarrassing to tell her. A true bestie will always be there for you, no matter the relationship status of either of you.
Oh, they’re also you’re stylise
Don’t even get me started on the time my BFF and I—in our later twenties—ventured to a popular chain story and realized the sizes were not what we thought. (That was not a medium romper, that was a child’s extra small, I swear to God.) I’m blessed with a bestie who will tell me her honest opinion about what I’m wearing and doesn’t sugar coat the fact that I have major romper wedgie and need to take that off before anyone sees me. I trust her to give me the real deal on something, while still helping me find the perfect look. Also important: that your bestie has a compatible shopping style. I’m a wanderer, and she is too. I’ll meet up with you in those cheap accessories, girl.
They’re your cheerleader
There’s nothing like getting a “good luck” text on the first day of a new job, or a “tell me all the details” request right after a first date. Knowing there’s a person who thinks about the details of your life feels ultra special. A good friend is someone who roots for you 24/7, someone who’s in your corner and wants you to succeed. Throughout my life, I’ve often overlooked the fact that a friend can play such a supportive role, but really, that’s what friends are for.
They’re your family, too
We love our families, but we didn’t pick them. That fact is never more apparent than during holidays, weddings, or times when you feel like an outsider within your genetically-given fam. Enter: your bestie. If you haven’t started a Friendsgiving or at least a yearly cocktail hour the week of Christmas, you’re missing out. Your bestie is your sister from another mister. You may not share the same genes, but you’re often of the same mind. And that’s the beauty of a BFF.
