Here’s Why Having More Than One Bestie is the Best
As a kid, I thought people were only allowed to have one best friend. Life is black and white before you understand how the world works, and this caused a lot of drama in my elementary school social network, as my buddies constantly changed their minds on who was their greatest friend of all. I eventually learned that it’s totally fine to have multiple close friends and that the variety is beneficial for everyone. In the words of Mindy Kaling‘s fictional alter-ego, “[A] best friend isn’t a person. . . It’s a tier.” Smart lady. Here’s why I love having more than one BFF in my life.
1. At least one friend is available at any given time
If you have a couple BFFs, you know at least one of them will be there for you when a major crisis comes your way. No matter what, somebody has your back at the very moment you find yourself in trouble.
2. It takes a little pressure off the title
Being another person’s BFF is nothing to take lightly, but when your friend has several besties, there’s less pressure to be present all the time. In the past, I’ve had friends who said I was their only BFF, and while I felt honored that they thought so highly of me, I knew I had to be there for them all the time because nobody else would.
3. Each bestie is cool in her own way
I call my childhood bestie (Crystal) to talk about pretty much everything, I call my post-grad bestie (Nikki) to talk about life, I call my New York bestie (Sara) to reminisce about the past, I call my UA bestie (Dyanna) to laugh about college horror stories, you get the idea. I like having BFFs with different personalities and backgrounds to get the best of all worlds. Some are fun to get brunch with while others make awesome bar wingwomen.
4. Each bestie will give you different advice
I’ve had a turbulent year and all my BFFs have been supportive in their own ways. Certain besties always told me to look on the bright side and remember there’s a light at the end of every tunnel, others said I had a right to be negative about my circumstances, and some encouraged me to change the way I looked at life. Depending on the day, there were certain things I wanted to hear and certain things I refused to consider, so it helped having friends with many different perspectives and approaches to my issues.
5. More BFFs = more inside jokes
Inside jokes make friendships stronger, funny situations even funnier, and life that much more amazing.
6. You have more people to share amazing stories with
You know when something really weird/hilarious/unreal happens to you and all you want to do is tell a friend? When you’ve got tons of BFFs, you can tell the story a bunch of times! Ah, the many joys of being rich in best friends. You can’t get much luckier than that.
