5 things true ‘Outlander’ fans are waiting for
At last, the wait is over! On Saturday, Starz will finally be airing the first episode of the second half of season one of Outlander – and if that sounds like a mouthful, it’s nothing compared to what’s in store for both book and show fans alike. For those of us who have eagerly been awaiting a television series since we first picked up Diana Gabaldon’s books (like me), we tried to convince ourselves that waiting a few more months for part two of season one wouldn’t be that hard. Little did we know what we were in for!
Even if you’ve never read the books from which the show takes its inspiration, you can’t help but fall in love with the story of Claire Randall, a nurse from World War II who is mysteriously transported back in time to the age of Scottish Highlanders. We know from interviews with the cast and executive producer Ronald D. Moore that the second half of this season is going to be more intense than ever before, but we’re ready to get sucked back through the stones into 1743.
We were left off with something of a cliffhanger, as Claire was left dangling from a knife’s edge (literally) at the hands of Black Jack Randall – when Jamie appeared to save the day. What can we expect from the rest of the season? We don’t have all the information yet, but here are just some of the things we’re hoping to see.
More gorgeous scenery in our eyeballs
The beautiful backdrop of Scotland is almost a character unto itself. The fans were overjoyed to learn that Outlander would be filmed in the very country in which the series first takes place, and having that knowledge adds an extra level of enjoyment when you’re watching the show. Not only that, but the fact that the production is in Scotland is creating new jobs for the people there – and as a result, will benefit the economy directly. It’s hard not to fall in love with the setting whenever you tune into a new episode, and we can’t wait for more striking locations when the show comes back on Saturday.
A growing love story between Claire and Jamie
Claire and Jamie were unexpectedly forced to rely on each other after Claire’s life was severely endangered – in order to protect her from Black Jack, she had to marry a Scot so that she could in turn become an honorary Scot. (It sort of helped that they were making heart-eye emoji faces at each other in the process.) Claire’s been experiencing a little emotional conflict, given the fact that she’s left a husband in the future, but there’s no denying that she cares a great deal for Jamie, and he for her. They’re still in the honeymoon stage of their romance, and honestly, it’s just darn adorable.
If Claire will reveal the secret of where she comes from
Claire still has no idea when – or if – she’ll be able to get back home, to her present. She’s been able to adapt remarkably well to the time period given her background in medicine, but at the same time, there have been tiny slip-ups here and there. She’s already aroused suspicion in Geillis Duncan, a local woman who might also be more than she seems. There’s no telling if she’ll be able to keep up the lie forever – and eventually, the secret is going to come out. We’re getting the impression that Jamie might have a little trouble wrapping his mind around the concept.
Will we get to learn more about Jamie?
We’ve gotten glimpses into Jamie’s past here and there – like the unfortunate truth of what happened to his sister Jenny, as well as how he acquired those ghastly scars on his back at the hands of Black Jack. This might be predominantly Claire’s story, but we’ve already seen in teaser clips that some of the upcoming voiceovers will actually be from Jamie’s POV instead of Claire’s. Giving him the role of narrator will definitely let us see into the eyes of the Scotsman who’s had quite an interesting life already. (Also, we’re pretty sure we’ll never get tired of listening to him talk. That accent.)
