“47 Meters Down” is getting a sequel, and this is only the beginning of its cinematic universe
Big news swimming at you from the shark-movie world: 47 Meters Down is getting a sequel. Right now, you might be wondering why Lisa (Mandy Moore) would dare to enter shark-infested waters again after the horrors she experienced. Especially after what happened to her sister, Kate (Claire Holt)… Not to mention, Lisa barely went on the cage dive to begin with, and that was before she had to fight for her life.
Well, the filmmakers have a workaround.
The sequel “will move the deadly shark action from Mexico to Brazil and follow a group of girls looking for adventure in the coastal metropolis of Recife,” according to The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the news. “Hoping to get off the well-worn tourist trail, they hear about some hidden underwater ruins only to find that the turquoise waves of their secret Atlantis aren’t completely uninhabited.”
What’s more, the film will put the claustrophobia of cave diving at the center, along with intense shark encounters. But, best of all is the name of the sequel. Can we get a drumroll, please?
The sequel is titled 48 Meters Down.
I REPEAT, 48 METERS DOWN. Just think of the possibilities for a cinematic universe: 49 Meters Down, 50 Meters Down, 51 Meters Down, and so on and so on…and so on. Or, perhaps the filmmakers will get a little ~wild~ with its potential future titles, Fast and the Furious style. Think 49 Meters Down: California Current, 50 Meters and Down, Meters Down 51, etc. etc.
But back to what’s actually ahead, Johannes Roberts will direct 48 Meters Down from a script he wrote with Ernest Riera. Roberts directed 47 Meters Down, and also co-wrote that script with Riera, so we trust that we’re in good hands fins.
No word yet about casting or a release date, but whoever is involved and whenever it comes out, we’ll be there — because, have you noticed we have an intense fascination with sharks?
