This 4-year-old has read over 1,000 books, and now we feel like a buncha lazy sloths

Whether you’re a true bibliophile or you still have stress dreams about high school lit class, you’re about to feel pretty inspired (and possibly very lazy, tbh!) by this 4-year-old bookworm. Meet Daliyah, who has read more than 1,000 books in her very short lifetime already.

We’ll let that sink in for a sec. Daliyah Marie Arana, a 4-year-old from Gainesville, Georgia, has probably read more books than you have as a full-fledged adult. How is that possible, you may ask? Allow us to explain.

Daliyah’s mom, Haleema Arana, told The Washington Post that her daughter pretty much knew how to read in utero, because she read books to her other children while pregnant with baby Daliyah.

Then when Daliyah was an infant, she frequently heard her older brother reading books out loud, and her mom says by 18 months, she was recognizing words from books she’d been read to.

Her mom told the Post, “She wanted to take over and do the reading on her own. It kind of took off from there. The more words she learned, the more she wanted to read.”

According to her mom, Daliyah read her first book in full on her own before she turned 3, and has read more than 1,000 books since, including college-level texts.

The 4-year-old wunderkind was just invited to the Library of Congress this week to meet with Carla Hayden, the 14th Librarian of Congress, where she was crowned the “librarian for the day.”

Daliyah dressed up for the big day, rocking a pink dress and matching bow. According to her mom, “She just kept saying how the Library of Congress is her most favorite, favorite, favorite library in the whole wide world.”

Though it’s worth noting that Daliyah is no stranger to the stacks — she has her very own library card at her local library in Georgia. The little lady told the Gainesville Times in October, “I like to check out books every day, and I want to teach other kids to read at an early age, too.”

Daliyah’s favorite author is Mo Willems (of the Pigeon children’s bookseries fame), and she enjoys “learning about dinosaurs and reading books about adventure.” She also hopes to become a librarian or a paleontologist when she grows up someday.

Even though she’s already hit a major milestone, Daliyah isn’t resting on her laurels; her goal is to read 1,500 books by the time she enters kindergarten next fall, with her mom saying she hopes to “help the teacher teach the other kids how to read.”

This little lady is our new hero.
