A woman received a $284 billion electric bill, and we’re anxious just reading that

A Pennsylvania woman was shocked to find out she owed her electric company, Penelec, $284 billion. 58-year-old Mary Horomanski says she went online to check her electricity bill to discover that she owed more money than she could have ever imagined. According to Erie Times-News, the amount of her bill was more than Hungary and South Africa’s national debts combined.

Although electricity bills are expected to rise during the holiday season, this particular shift seems a little, uh, insane.

"My eyes just about popped out of my head," she told the news outlet. "We had put up Christmas lights and I wondered if we had put them up wrong."

The good news (if you want to call it that) was that she didn’t have to pay the full amount until November 2018. Instead, her minimum payment for the month of December was “only” $28,156.

Horomanski immediately texted her son, who contacted the company to advise them about the hefty statement. Luckily, the bill turned out to be a huge error. It was later adjusted to reflect the correct payment of $284.46.

Mark Durbin, a spokesperson for Penelec’s parent company First Energy, said he doesn’t know how the error occurred, but somehow the decimal point was placed in the wrong spot.

"I can’t recall ever seeing a bill for billions of dollars," he said. "We appreciate the customer’s willingness to reach out to us about the mistake."

Horomanski laughed off the mistake, revealing that she asked her son to get her a heart monitor for Christmas this year.
