The 2018 Golden Globes were one of the most-watched in years, and here’s why that’s important

After 2017 closed on a low note for Hollywood, many were eager to see how the industry would tackle awards season. And the 2018 Golden Globes were one of the most-watched in years.

According to Deadline.com, the viewership of the 75th annual Golden Globes wasn’t necessarily record-breaking for NBC. But ratings didn’t drop from years past, either. The site confirmed that metered market results showed that the 2018 Golden Globes was up 1% from last year’s. These ratings are the second best for the Golden Globes in the past 11 years.

The success of last night’s televised ceremony might have something to do with viewers wanting or expecting something different from Hollywood. Would the subject of sexual abuse and harassment be brought up, or would it once again be swept under the carpet?

Luckily, many attendees spoke about the importance of listening and supporting victims. Actresses and actors also showed their support for victims by wearing black and donning pins from the newly formed “Time’s Up” campaign.

On the flip side, some complained that the 2018 Golden Globes was too political. Many feel that actors and actresses shouldn’t voice their opinions on “important” topics. (Yeah, okay, no.)

But many (ourselves included) are both thankful and encouraging of anyone who helps bring attention to these critical issues, and celebrities of all people have a powerful platform to do so. The solid ratings proved that most viewers didn’t have an issue with the political nature of the show, which hopefully indicates that most of America is ready and eager for change.
