What the 2018 Critics’ Choice Awards results could mean for the 2018 Oscars
Thus far, the 2018 awards season has yielded some interesting results. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri swept the 2018 Golden Globes. However, the 2018 Critics’ Choice Awards on January 10th favored Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water. Might the Critics’ Choice Awards serve as an early indicator of the 2018 Oscar results?

According to IndieWire.com, in eight out of the past nine years, the winner of the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor has gone on to win an Oscar in the same category. With those odds in his favor, it looks like Sam Rockwell has a great chance of taking home an Oscar this year for his role in Three Billboards. And perhaps some of Rockwell’s luck will rub off on Allison Janney, who won the Best Supporting Actress category at both the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards for her work in I, Tonya.
However, Del Toro’s The Shape of Water racked up the most nominations at both the 2018 Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards. It’s also nominated in numerous categories at the upcoming February 18th BAFTA Awards. With a full cart of nominations and wins, it looks like The Shape of Water might be the one to beat at the Oscars.
IndieWire.com also reported that if Del Toro wins an Oscar for Best Director, La La Land’s Damien Chazelle will be the only non-Mexican director to win in the past five years. Which is actually pretty cool.

Although snubbed at the Golden Globes, Get Out is back on the awards scene. The film won the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Sci-Fi or Horror Movie, and Jordan Peele took home the award for Best Original Screenplay.

It’s fun to speculate, but the only way to know for sure who will take home an Oscar is to tune in. The nominations for the 90th annual Academy Awards will be announced on January 23rd, and the show will go live on March 4th. As usual, we can’t wait.
