And your 2016 Oscar nominees are…

After months of speculation, the 88th Annual Academy Awards, which will be hosted by Chris Rock on Sunday, February 28th, kicked off today with the announcement of this year’s Oscar nominees. Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, directors Guillermo Del Toro and Ang Lee, and John Krasinski took the stage to make the announcements, and the nominees probably won’t surprise you.

Some of our favorite movies are up for recognition, like Mad Max: Fury Road, Brooklyn, and Room for Best Picture. Carol is up for Best Adapted Screenplay, and Inside Out for Original Screenplay.

The nominees for Best Supporting Actress are equally wonderful. There’s Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), Rooney Mara (Carol), Rachel McAdams (Spotlight), Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl), and Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs). For Best Actress, Cate Blanchett (Carol), Brie Larson (Room), Jennifer Lawrence (Joy), Charlotte Rampling (45 Years), and Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) are up for consideration.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens also gets a few nods for Best Original Score, Best Film Editing, and Best Visual Effects.

However, these nominations are already drawing criticism for the distinct lack minorities, especially people of color.
