This weekend, the country was filled with electric political energy as thousands of people rallied at the Women’s March in Washington, D.C. and other cities across the U.S. But one of the most memorable moments had to be the “Nasty Woman” poem that Ashley Judd recited for the D.C. Women’s March participants.

You may have heard the poem itself, but do you know about the woman who wrote “Nasty Woman”? You should, because 19-year-old Nina Mariah Donovan is a force to know.

The 19-year-old from Franklin, Tennessee originally wrote “Nasty Woman” late last year. After watching Donovan perform the original piece, Judd reached out to her for permission to recite it at the D.C. Women’s March.

Though some of the lines may make listeners uncomfortable, the spirit of the poem itself is meant to evoke feelings of passion and anger, to rise up against the oppression that many people face everyday under a Trump presidency and beyond.
