13 Rom-Com Couples With the Best Chemistry
The only thing I love more than a Meg Ryan movie is a Tom Hanks + Meg Ryan movie. Ryan is starring in (and directing) a film called Ithaca, an adaptation of the 1943 novel The Human Comedy. Reports earlier this year announced Hanks would be the project’s executive producer, but now rumor has it he will also make a cameo in the film (!). What do I have to do to make sure this actually happens? Start a Facebook fan page? Invent a hashtag? Write a letter to my congressman? Because I’ll do it. #MenksMovieMagic
We love Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan because of their amazing chemistry. They make us believe that anything is possible—even things like successful Internet dating, or falling in love with a stranger on the top of the Empire State Building. If all goes well, Ithaca will mark the fourth time these two have stolen the show and won our hearts on the big screen. To celebrate their reunion, here are 13 more rom-com couples with truly amazing chemistry.
1. Richard Gere & Julia Roberts
There’s also plenty of history between these stars. They carved a permanent place in our hearts as Edward and Vivian in Pretty Woman, and when they reunited nearly 10 years later in Runaway Bride, it was clear there would always be a certain spark between them.
2. Christian Slater & Patricia Arquette
True Romance is the most romantic movie of all time, period. These two nailed it as Clarence and Alabama and convinced us they’d been head over heels in love for ages, though they’d actually only known each other for one night. Their crazy eyes are on point in this film.
3. Paul Rudd & Alicia Silverstone
Some people say the best romances start out as friendships—or in Josh and Cher’s case, as ex-step siblings. Whatever their story is, it worked for them. Josh’s awkward attempts to fit in with Cher’s way cool life are some of the funniest (and weirdly, most romantic) moments in the movie.
4. John Corbett & Nia Vardalos
When you see John Corbett, maybe you can’t help but see Aidan Shaw—ex-boyfriend of Carrie Bradshaw—and that’s fine. But John Corbett has also starred alongside Nia Vardalos twice, and their chemistry is through the roof. They’re so good together, I could just sit and watch these two grocery shop.
5. Joseph Gordon-Levitt & Zooey Deschanel
They’re incredible in 500 Days of Summer because they’re so heartbreakingly realistic together. I fall in love with JGL and Zooey all over again every time I watch this movie (which is often).
6. Bradley Cooper & Jennifer Lawrence
It seems like this pairing almost came out of nowhere, and now we can’t get enough of it. But I’m definitely not mad about it. As long as someone continues to make Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence movies, I will continue to see them.
7. Harrison Ford & Carrie Fisher
Though Star Wars is not technically a rom-com, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher sparred like they were Harry and Sally. They had that realistic/sarcastic modern-day-relationship thing going on as Han Solo and Princess Leia, and it totally set them apart from other on-screen couples at the time. Their spark-filled relationship can pretty much be summed up by one moment of dialogue. Leia: “I love you.” Han: “I know.”
8. Hugh Grant & Julia Roberts
I’m just a writer, sitting in front of my computer, thanking Julia Roberts for delivering one of my favorite rom com lines of all time. Notting Hill is the quintessential romantic comedy and is simply delightful, as are Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts together in it.
9. Hugh Grant & Martine McCutcheon
Moving on to the Hugh Grant bonus round: Who exactly is Martine McCutcheon? Natalie. Hugh Grant’s secretary in Love Actually. They have chemistry to the max.
10. Jack Nicholson & Diane Keaton
There’s something about them that’s refreshingly adorable. They totally dated IRL, which makes it even better.
11. Jon Hamm & Kristen Wiig
They’re funny. They’re good looking. And when they’re funny and good looking together, it’s a home run for everyone involved. You’ve seen them in Bridesmaids, but check out one of their lesser-known and more serious projects, Friends with Kids. It’s written and directed by Hamm’s girlfriend, Jennifer Westfeldt, and shows how great they are together even with serious subject matter.
12. Andy Samberg & Rashida Jones
If you haven’t seen Celeste & Jessie, stop reading this article and remedy that. I need these two to appear in more things together, because they make a stellar team.
13. Heath Ledger & Julia Stiles
There was something about his persistence and her stubbornness in 10 Things I Hate About You that just worked. It’s so sad that Heath died so young for many reasons, one of them being that he didn’t get to make more movies and especially more with Stiles.
Three cheers for true (movie) love! If you’ll excuse me, I need to watch my entire rom-com DVD collection, right now.
