13 Reasons Why Season 2 will deal with three major topics — and all of them are pretty heavy

The first season of 13 Reasons Why made a name for itself by tackling a handful of extremely heavy and difficult topics, sparking a lot of controversy in the process. But while the series has made adjustments to better prepare viewers for the difficult material ahead, when Season 2 is released on Netflix in just a few weeks, it once again, won’t be shying away from sensitive issues.

While Season 1 adapted the novel by Jay Asher in its entirety, and Netflix never intended the series to run for more than a single season, Yorkey has spoken out about advocating for a second season, feeling that the series needed to further explore the loose threads and cliffhangers from the end of Season 1.

Of the many loose ends the show plans to elaborate on in Season 2, Yorkey revealed in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, that some of the arcs in the upcoming season will follow Clay (Dylan Minnette) as he comes to terms with Hannah’s death and Jessica’s (Alisha Boe) recovery from her sexual assault. Additionally, a narrative following Tyler (Devin Druid), who Yorkey said, “might be at risk of being a school shooter,” will be explored.

But while Season 2 will continue to tackle some pretty difficult and sensitive topics, this season will see the characters begin to recover from the traumas they’ve been facing.

"Recovery is a central theme for us," Yorkey told THR. "So many of these kids had been through traumatic experiences, both due to Hannah’s death and also independent of that and just as a part of their lives, and we wanted to begin to see them start back on the road toward wellness and wholeness and see what that looks like in the sense that recovery is not a straight line, and it’s not a simple process."

Considering all the traumatic experiences a number of the characters went through during the Season 1, we’re glad Season 2 will find them on the road to recovery — with a more realistic portrayal of recovery at that.

Season 2 of 13 Reasons Why is slated for release on May 18th.
