Yes, Hannah will always be a part of 13 Reasons Why — including in a potential Season 3
While Hannah Baker’s story seemed to finally come to a close at the end of Season 2 of 13 Reasons Why, if Netflix picks the series up for a third season, the series won’t be entirely done with the character. Season 2 of the breakout series may have seen the lawsuit between the Bakers and Liberty High School reach a final verdict and Hannah’s family and friends on the path towards closure, but it seems the doors may not have officially closed on the Liberty High School students.
Hannah Baker’s death may have continued to be the central focus of Season 2 — providing the backbone of the narrative — but the sophomore season of the hit series also left plenty of room to continue the stories of Hannah’s friends and classmates.
But while a potential third season may shift the focus off Hannah, it doesn’t mean she’s not still vital to the story.
Showrunner Brian Yorkey recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about where a potential Season 3 would take the story, revealing that while the spotlight will shift from Hannah, her presence and her impact on her fellow Liberty High students will continue to play a pivotal role.
"Should we get a season 3, the loss of Hannah will continue to be the inciting traumatic event for this group of kids and parents. It will always be part of the story," Yorkey said. "But I don’t see a tremendous continued presence for Hannah because I think we needed her to finish telling everyone else’s side of her story and we needed her so that Clay could get to a point of saying, ‘I love you and I let you go.’ If the story does continue, and certainly there is lots more to know about a lot of these characters, then the spotlight focus on Hannah Baker is probably done."
So while it looks like we may see the return of Katherine Langford as Hannah Baker in the future in flashback form, it appears we’ve reached the end of Ghost Hannah — although her presence will continue to be felt if the show moves forward. Even though Clay seemed to find “closure” with her at her memorial service, she’s always going to be a part of his life — and considering where the season ended Clay might need *someone* to talk to come Season 3.
Season 2 of 13 Reasons Why is now streaming on Netflix.
