Ah, wedding proposals! Hopefully, it’s one of the best questions you’ll ever get asked. I’ve only witnessed one live and it was very cheesy, very romantic, and very exciting. And we’ve all seen the proposals that have gone viral. Where do people come up with this stuff? The same place where we learn all of our life skills: At the movies! Rom-coms are responsible for some of the quirkiest, sweetest, sappiest and most unforgettable engagements known to man. So, pay attention, potential proposers, because here are some of the most inspiring scenes in film history:

Emma Thompson realizes Hugh Grant isn’t married like she thought and that he, in fact, wants to marry her!
Nothing better than a cross-cultural, butchered-language proposal in front of an entire restaurant.

One of my favorite movies, despite its unarguably creepy premise (it’s about a dream guy in a coma). And a very good proposal! And I much prefer this Sandra Bullock proposal to The Proposal’s proposal.
5. A Walk to Remember
It’s Nicholas Sparks, it’s super cheesy, it’s great.
Not technically a proposal, but he does say he wants to spend the rest of his life with her—among a million other great things.
7. Big Fish
He gets her a field full of daffodils and takes a beating from the dude who plays Roy on The Office. And it’s all in the name of love.
