100 years of kids’ toys, because nostalgia is real

Toys are arguably the best part of childhood. And no matter what decade grew up in, the toys that were available to play with were the best, coolest toys a kid could ever have. That is until the next best, coolest toys were invented in the following decade. For most kids, toys get better as technology gets better, but for adults, it’s the toys we grew up playing with that give us all the happy feelings.

To celebrate the gift-giving holidays, the new year and nostalgic feelings in general, Mode put together a video that highlights the best toys from the past 10 decades — starting in 1910 and ending in 2015. It’s no surprise that in the past 100 years, popular toys went from marbles to hover boards (well, faux hover boards, but still).

I can’t help but wonder if kids who were born in the ’00s will look back at their toys and feel a similar universal nostalgic feeling like we feel now. Because prior to the ’90s, each decade of kids pretty much had the same toys as everyone else— there just weren’t as many toys in existence as there are now. Like if you’re a child of the ’80s, chances are you had a Light Brite or a Cabbage Patch. Or if you grew up in the ’50s, you probably had a Matchbox car. Toys were simple then, because the technology just didn’t exist yet.

Sigh. The good ol’ days.
