10 Ladies To Watch In Sochi
The 2014 Olympic Winter Games have begun! With all the controversy surrounding these games, it’s easy to forget that they’re actually supposed to be about awesome feats of athleticism and some international togetherness. With that in mind, here are ten ladies (or groups of ladies) to check out in Sochi:
1. The Norwegian Women’s curling team. While the men have been getting all the hype for their crazy uniforms, the pants on these women are just as, if not more awesome. Can’t wait to see what they’re wearing this year!
2. Women’s ski jump. This is the first year for this event, because previously people thought too much ski jumping would basically make your uterus fall out. Obviously this is crazy, so it’ll be exciting to watch the women who’ve devoted themselves to this sport get to shine in the Olympic spotlight for the first time.
3. Lolo Jones. After missing out on track medals in Beijing and London, Lolo is going to try again, this time as part of the U.S. bobsled team. Bobsledding and a comeback story? How can you not watch?
4 & 5. Jocelyne and Monique Lamoureux. These twin sisters will be playing hockey for Team USA. Like the rest of the team, they’re ready to come back from their second place finish in the 2010 Games and score a gold medal for the U.S. women’s hockey team for the first time since 1998.
6. Ashley Wagner. After controversially snagging her spot on the U.S. Figure Skating team via her ‘body of work’ rather than placing in the top 3 in Nationals, it’ll be interesting to see how she performs in Sochi.
7. Mikaela Shiffrin. She’s the youngest American to win a national title in slalom skiing, and has a good chance of medalling in Sochi. Plus, her 92-year-old grandmother says her skiing is “keeping her alive.” How can you not root for that?
8. Lydia Lassila. This Australian freestyle skier hopes to be the first woman to complete a quadruple twisting triple somersault in the Olympics. This sounds like the sort of stunt that should be attempted in gymnastics or diving, so the fact that someone’s attempting to do it in the middle of winter with skis strapped to their feet should be worth watching.
9. Julia Marino. She’ll be the only person to representing Paraguay, a nation competing in the Winter Olympics for the first time, in a new event, slopestyle skiing. Way to be a trailblazer!
10. Zaika. Okay, so she’s not competing in the games, but she is one of their adorable mascots.
