10 Fiercest Mamas on TV Right Now

With Mother’s Day coming up, it’s hard to stop at celebrating our own mothers, as amazing as they are. Sometimes we also want to give a toast to all the fictional mothers out there who have taught us to be strong, bold, and sometimes even ruthless. I could probably go on for pages about all the TV moms who have shaped my life, but I decided to focus on all the tenacious moms, the moms who are super intense and are willing to sacrifice pretty much anything for their kids, and the moms who may not be the most conventional when it comes to parenting. There’s nothing more fierce than a Mama Bear and her cubs, right? Here are my current favorites:

1. Alicia Florrick from The Good Wife

First of all, let me just say that I adore Julianna Marguilies and have loved her since her ER days. The Good Wife is the perfect role for her, because Julianna knows how to play an incredibly strong woman facing incredibly difficult obstacles. Juggling her job, her scumbag husband, Will Gardner, and her kids must be tough. Especially after what happened with Will (I won’t say anything!). Alicia is always a total champ and keeps it together no matter what.

2. Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones

Cersei is comprised of one-hundred percent evil matter, but I kind of respect her. I hate her, but I get her. Is that even possible? Whether she’s sleeping with her brother or tormenting people for “simple pleasures,” she is always on guard and has her children’s backs even if they’re scary sociopaths. She’s asserted at least a million times that her children are the only beings she loves and lives for. That’s kind of sweet, right?

3. Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones

The Khaleesi may be the most important mom of all on Game of Thrones; she is the Mother of Dragons and pretty much holds the fate of The Seven Kingdoms in the palm of her hand.

4. Gloria Delgado-Pritchett from Modern Family

Gloria is the TV mom I would totally want to have cocktails with. She would give me the scoop on everything and definitely not hold back. Not only is she super fun, but she’s an awesome, encouraging mom who shows Manny and Fulgencio Joe that it’s okay to be outspoken and well…brazen.

5. Leslie Knope from Parks and Recreation 

**SPOILER ALERT** We recently found out Leslie Knope is going to be a mama! I cannot think of a better role model for a baby. Best of all, we all know Leslie is going to teach her future son or daughter how to be a hard worker, educate them about every single admirable female politician, and show them how to fight the good fight. Also, does this mean Leslie and Ben’s baby/babies will be BFF with Ron Swanson’s baby?

6. Kristina Braverman from Parenthood

Kristina may have married into the Braverman clan, but she is a Braverman through and through. She is the most supportive and wisest mom, ever. I feel like you could confess that you stole a car and she would just be like, “let’s brainstorm ways we can fix this.”

7. Lucille Bluth from Arrested Development

Lucille may be one of the most self-involved fictional moms ever, but who could resist her insanity? Probably her kids, but we all know The Bluths wouldn’t be who and where they are today if it weren’t for Lucille (who, as we discovered at the end of season three, was running the Bluth family business the entire time), although is that a good thing? Does it matter? As long as she and Buster keep attending Motherboy in matching outfits, I think it’s safe to say Lucille is a fierce mom. (And because she’s so stellar, it doesn’t even matter that Arrested Development is over. This show is in our blood.)

8. Regina Mills from Once Upon a Time

I love Mary Margaret and Emma, but Regina has gone through such a pivotal character transformation this season, I just have to give her some credit here. Like Cersei, Regina pretty much only loves her kid, and this love is so true (**spoiler alert!**) that it breaks the Wicked Witch’s memory spell. Nothing gets in the way of Regina when it comes to Henry, not even the darkest and most wicked of evils. Also, can we all agree that Regina is HILARIOUS this season? #TeamRegina

9. Selina Meyer from Veep

Selina Meyer is totally the badass mom who gives no f###s. She curses like a sailor and is a total powerhouse. Like Leslie and Regina, Selina has come a long, long way, and it’s awesome to see someone kick so much ass even if she initially faced defeat. While Selina may not be the most affectionate mom, she might just be the most hilarious. Also, it’s Julia Louis-Dreyfus, so how can we not love her?

10. Fiona Gallagher from Shameless

Okay, so Fiona didn’t technically give birth to her three younger brothers and one sister, but she took over her parents’ roles back when she was just a teenager because Frank and Monica are the worst human beings alive. At 22, she became their legal guardian. If you’ve kept up with Shameless, you’ll know that Fiona made an extremely terrible mistake and almost killed one of her brothers, but I think by the end of season four she becomes worthy of redemption. If anyone deserves a second chance, it’s Fiona.
