Any Of These Actresses Could Be The Next Jennifer Lawrence
Of course there will never REALLY be another Jennifer Lawrence just like there will never be another Julia Roberts, Audrey Hepburn, or Marilyn Monroe. The reason a person becomes a superstar is because of how weird/special/original/inimitably HER that girl is. Still, if we want to break down the basics of what makes Her Royal Lawrence-ness so HOT DAMN, it would look a little something like this. 1.) SHE’S THE BEST AT ACTING: We want to see her in everything because it’s no fluke she’s nominated for an Oscar on a weekly basis. Girl destroys it on the regular. 2.)SHE’S A+ BEST FRIEND MATERIAL Lawrence reinvented the red carpet and changed the talk show circuit conversation. JLaw proved that you really can be a class clown and a homecoming queen. She seems like just the best of hangs. Can you imagine a sleepover with JLaw? I would have so much fun I would spontaneously combust into confetti in between mani-pedis and playing “Never Have I Ever.” So here they are, ten actresses on the rise who kill it on camera and seem like complete dolls offscreen, all worthy of rising to the tippy-top of the A-list ranks.
1.) Gabourey Sidibe
Girl has not met a role she hasn’t hit out of the park (Besides her star-making turn in “Precious”, she also killed it on “The Big C” and “American Horror Story”, and is getting ready to kill it again on Fox’s hip-hop drama “Empire” this fall). Her “Ms. Gala” speech on confidence is the best thing I’ve read on the internet this year. I will fight you dirty for that available spot in her celebrity entourage.
2.) Brie Larson
If you haven’t seen “Short Term 12” (it’s on Netflix Instant, everyone who has an internet connection has Netflix Instant, right?) turn off your phone, hide from the world for 96 minutes, and go have a religious experience. Brie Larson deserved a Best Actress Award for that role (she deserved ALL THE OSCARS THEY MAKE for that role) and she didn’t even get a nod. She just got cast as the lead in the adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s bestselling novel “Room.” Her time is coming, all the Oscars will one day be hers.
3.) Maia Mitchell
Cross my heart, some of the best young actresses around are hanging out on ABC Family. Case in point, Maia Mitchell the Australian actress who plays Callie Jacob, a girl constantly thrown back and forth between juvenile detention and foster care in the appropriately-titled “The Fosters.” It’s a beautifully acted television series, and Mitchell is the crown jewel of the show.
4.) Elle Fanning
She just seems like a fairy princess someone stole from a magical forest and made a child star. I’ll watch her in anything. I always get worried that child stars are going to get chewed up and spit out by the Great White Shark Jaws of Hollywood, but she seems like she’s got her ish together, check out this great piece in which she’s interviewed by fellow child star ScarJo.
5.) Zoe Kravitz
I know, I know, “Divergent” was all about Shailene Woodley (well, Shailene’s acting and Theo James’ being emotionally distant and taking his shirt off a lot) but I came away SO impressed with Zoe Kravitz . She’s got charisma for days. She killed it as a sidekick, now I want to see her kill it as a lead.
6.) Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson
I know, I know, I KNOW I’m cheating by using two ladies in one slot (it really should be 11 actresses in the title) BUT Glazer and Jacobson in their wonderfully gross/sweet/hilarious/deeply weird Comedy Central show “Broad City” based off their same-titled web series, are so symbiotic in their on-screen girl-mance I didn’t want to separate the two. I would third wheel this duo any day of the week.
7.) Vanessa Marano
No, seriously, so many good actresses on ABC Family, I swear to God they’ve got a Weird Science laboratory where they make Little Meryl Streeps in test tubes. Another favorite ABC Fam star of mine is Vanessa Marano who plays Bay Kennish on “Switched at Birth.” Her character is covered in porcupine quills and has the softest underbelly, and Marano plays both the tough front and the vulnerability pitch-perfectly.
8.) Naya Rivera
No one can throw down like Naya Rivera on “Glee,” that girl can hurl an insult like William Fricking Shakespeare. Sing, Dance, Act, Spit Game, the girl is a Quadruple Threat. I want to see her pull a Rachel Berry, break away from the show choir pack, and razzle dazzle us with her solo act.
9.)Amy Schumer
True story, I watched every episode of “Inside Amy Schumer” in 36 hours and will be first in line to buy tickets to her Judd Apatow-directed film “Trainwreck.” She’s got her finger right on the pulse and is both sidesplittingly hilarious, brutally honest, and totally original in her sketch comedy depictions of the plight of the 21st century American woman.
10.) Lupita Nyong’o
Yes, she got all the love for her killer acting and killer red-carpeting this awards season, now I just want her to keep getting all the love forever and ever and ever. Images via, via, via, via, via, via, via, via, via, via, via
