It’s hard to believe, but Zooey Deschanel’s baby girl (the adorably named Elsie Otter Pechenik) is already a year old! To celebrate this momentous occasion with us all, the little girl’s mom stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! to discuss this not-so-little birthday. Zooey explained to Jimmy that she didn’t have a big party, but did attempt to create the “smash cake” trend that’s making the internet rounds these days.

(In case you’re not up on your toddler trends, a “smash cake” is an extra cake made for the tot’s first birthday party specifically designed not to be eaten by guests. Instead, it’s made for the birthday baby to dig right in, making an inevitable mess and a hilarious photo-op!)

Most kids would be understandably delighted to go HAM on their very own cake (especially if it’s made by human delight Zooey Deschanel), but not Elsie.

Zooey revealed,

“I made her a little heart-shaped cake that didn’t have sugar. I put a mashed banana in it – well, she’s so little, and there’s a lot of sugar in cake. And then I whipped up some coconut cream and put it on top. It looked like a cupcake. I kept seeing on the internet, ‘smash cake, smash cake … you gotta make a smash cake for your one year old.’ So I’m like, ‘I’m making this cake just so she can smash it.'”

Elsie wasn’t here for all of that, though. “So we’re like, ‘alright, here’s your cake! Happy birthday!” Zooey stated. Elsie dipped a finger in, took a taste, and shook her head NO. Zooey said Elsie was “not at all interested! No smashing!”

As for the whole “no sugar” diet, Zooey revealed that she will give her daughter sugar eventually, but is holding off as long as she can “because it makes them crazy. Even a baked apple made Elsie hilariously hyper and caused her to make this face:
