I’ve been a fan of Birdy for what feels like a long time. She’s an incredible musician from the UK and she got her start after winning Open Mic UK, a music competition, in 2008. At only 15 years old, her talent is undeniable. Her music is both haunting and entrancing in the best possible ways and her debut album hits the US on March 20th!
I first heard her cover of Bon Iver’s song ‘Skinny Love’ during an afternoon at work and I immediately kept it on repeat for a long time. You may have seen the HelloGiggles premiere of Birdy’s ‘Terrible Love’ here, but if you’ve still never heard her music, you should drop everything and head over to her YouTube page!
I had the pleasure of chatting with Birdy this week and you can read the interview below!
When did you realize that singing was something you wanted to pursue as a career?
I think it was a natural thing for me. I’ve been singing since about I was about 8 years old and I’ve been writing songs. I really realized I wanted to do it as a job when I was about 12 years old, when I entered a competition that I won. That connection with the audience was an amazing experience.
So in addition to putting out a record you are attending school as well, right? Do you find it hard to balance school and music or have you found it simple?
Yeah. It’s getting harder but I haven’t missed too much. And I have lots of time to catch up which is great!
Your record comes out March 20 in the US and it’s already out in the UK. The album is entirely covers of songs – how did you choose which songs to cover?
Yeah, apart from one, which is one I wrote. A lot of the songs I cover I had already loved like, Phoenix’s ‘1901’. I had my brothers play some when I was younger. And the other artists I chose, I loved and they had styles I liked and listened to anyway.
Which track is your favorite?
I think it would be ‘1901’ because it’s a lot different than the others. It’s upbeat and has a different vibe to it. Or the one I wrote, ‘Without A Word’, so it means something to me.
Are you planning to write any songs yourself?
I’m writing all the time, yeah. I’ve got a few songs stored up and lots of ideas! The second album is going to be all originals.
Oh that’s great! I’m very excited! Do you have any advice for young girls who might want to be a performer as well?
Hmm, I would say stay true who are. That’s what people love.
I am very excited to see what you do in the future!
Birdy’s album is already out in the UK and comes out in the US on March 20th. Plus, she her song ‘Just A Game’ is coming out on The Hunger Games soundtrack, also out on March 20th. I know – I’m excited, too!
