I work in a conservation studio where I can’t wear gloves most of the time. My nails never look nice, and the few times I’ve painted them–they’re chipped within hours. So sick of nail art pictures!

I totally understand where she’s coming from. I have two girls that are 16 months apart, now 3 and 4, and when you’re changing diapers and making bottles at all hours, sleep is desperately in short supply. You tend to let things slide. I may have lived in messy buns, jeans, yoga pants, tees, and the comfiest of sneaks for a while, but I always did my nails. As a reformed nail biter, having them shiny, smooth, and pretty has kept me from getting back into that awful habit. They’re never going to be super long or strong due to the damage that 20 years of nail biting has caused, but I find a lot of relaxation in the ritual of doing my nails. I usually do them before bed, right before I go to sleep. I’m less likely to smudge them that way, for some reason. Right now, I’m rocking a hot pink base with a really awesome mixed black and white matte glitter from Hard Candy (called Black Tie Optional…so cool looking).
I feel like doing my nails in weird, colorful, eyecatching ways is part of my identity–and no matter how busy I am, I always try to make time to keep them up.

I went the whole acrylic nails avenue years ago, and I liked the idea of long nails but not the awkwardness of them being fake. After many long years, I finally was able to grow out and keep my natural nails long. Now all I want to do is a get a fancy gel manicure.
