I’d been in a relationship for six years and he was still saying he wasn’t ready to get married. As I listened to this story of what love is SUPPOSED to be like it finally hit me that he was never going to be that guy. I had reached a catharsis. I turned around and gave my boss notice right then and ended it when I got home. Three weeks later I was living 300 miles away. Its now been a year and it was the best decision I ever made but I’m here to tell ya those first seven months were rocky as hell. The line in Payphone that gets me everytime is the opener, “I know it’s hard to remember the people we used to be. It’s even harder to think that you’re not here next to me.” Ughhh, gets me everytime, especially right after I’ve run into my high school boyfriend, i.e. the one that got away.

It’s really funny that you mentioned “Nothing Better,” when I broke up w/ my 2 year boyfriend I used this song to console myself, particularly the line: “I feel I must interject here you’re getting carried away feeling sorry for yourself
With these revisions and gaps in history.” In fact, I actually paraphrased it for him as he tried to convince me that we should stay together. I’m pretty sure I listened to this song at least once a day for a few months following the break up. But I did also listen to it before the break up, so going back to your question…. I’m not sure if the song helped or made it worse.

First of all, I vote Carrie. And you pose an interesting question. It’s the modern version of ” the chicken of the egg”. And this article couldn’t have come at a better time. I went through my first break up and the relationship lifespan was 4 years. The reason he ended it: he didn’t want to get married. We are soul sisters! I find myself identifying with music more than ever. Word to the wise: play Taylor Swift’s “Begin Again” on repeat and you move through the emotional spectrum starting with crying and ending with hopeful and all warm and fuzzy inside.

The end of the song is so sad.”still I think of her when the sun goes down, it never goes away, but it all works out”. I dare anyone to listen to that song and not feel anything! Great article!
