What is a BB Cream, Anyway? Jennifer Walker

BB Cream. I know you’ve heard the term a thousand times but do you know what a BB cream even is? BB most commonly stands for beauty balm but can also stand for blemish balm or blemish base. It seems to be that every cosmetic line in the galaxy today has this so-called BB cream, but what exactly is it? And why should you try it?

BB creams treat the skins appearance with the highest levels of active skincare ingredients. These creams are multitasking beauty products that hydrate, prime, protect and perfect all in one. Most BB creams you find are also tinted, leaving you no reason for the added step of foundation. Say farewell to your long line of beauty products and say hello to BB.

Here are some great BB creams to try out:

bobbibb

Bobbi Brown BB Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 35 $42.00

Bobbi’s BB cream comes in 5 different shades and features a broad spectrum SPF 35 sun protection. SPF is a MUST for the sunny months ahead. This formula combines water-attracting molecules to help boost hydration as well as light-reflective pearls to brighten a dull looking complexion. The botanical extracts and caffeine in this BB reduces discoloration and redness. While the pore-refining peptides like Argireline help to minimize pore size, fine lines and wrinkles.

Check, check and check! With all that, need I say more? Not only does it do everything under the sun to help protect, correct and perfect your skin, but it also creates a smooth canvas for the rest of your makeup application. Do you dread that unwanted shine that you find in most foundations? Not a worry – this one will leave your skin with the perfect matte finish. Consider this BB your new bestie.

Loreal Magic Skin Beautifier BB Cream $10.95

This beautiful BB cream comes in 4 different shades and blends so smoothly to leave a bare skin finish. This flawless formula is infused with antioxidants Vitamin C & E and will instantly transform to the perfect shade for your skin tone. Amazing, right? I’ve found that I prefer a full coverage without the heavy feel and this BB cream by Loreal is fabulous for that. It does cover all of my imperfections while leaving my skin looking and feeling bare.

This BB is an awesome product for the price! I would definitely recommend this one to my best friend, mother, coworker or a passing stranger on the street.

Jane Iredale Glow Time Full Coverage Mineral BB Cream $48.00

Getting to be my ALL TIME favorite BB cream is Glow Time by Jane Iredale. This BB cream is magical to say the least and comes in 6 different shades. If you don’t know about Jane Iredale don’t feel silly. This line is very exclusive and will usually only be seen at the high dollar department stores such as Nordstrom or in plastic surgeon offices (but can also be purchased online).

Jane like La Bella Donna from my previous post is a mineral line of makeup. Her products can be found in plastic surgeon offices because they sport such awesome coverage that they are used to hide scaring. BUT do not assume the coverage looks or feels heavy! This BB cream is completely flawless and will cover blemishes, minimize pore size, disguise wrinkles and literally make you glow. I could rant and rave a whole post for this BB but just trust me when I say this one is worth the purchase.

Garnier Skin Renew Miracle Skin Perfector BB Cream SPF 15 $10.35

Last but not least is the Garnier Skin Renew Miracle skin perfector BB Cream. This one comes in two different shades (we do wish it had more). This little miracle is packed with antioxidants to make your skin feel as good as it looks. The color appears nearly sheer on the skin and goes on super smooth due to the nice creamy texture. The mineral pigments within the formula camouflage any minor skin issues you may have with your complexion, while leaving your skin feeling naked. This BB was named Readers’ Choice Breakthrough in 2013.

  1. Has anyone tried the one from MAC?!?!?! I’m thinking about buying that one… Wanted to get opinions before I take the leap lol :-/ thanks!!! (I haven’t tried any BB CREAMS yet)

  2. The Garnier BB cream has come out with more shades recently. I just bot a tube of fair/light when they only used to have light/medium (which I never bought because my skin and white paper are close relations) It’s great for someone that doesnt need serious coverage but just wants to moisturize and even things out.

  3. love the Garnier BB cream!!

  4. I LOVE BBs, but I’m so sad that only a few have enough for Dark skinned people like me. Also, I too have heard that the Korean BB creams are a much better quality than the American ones. ALAS, I still have a skin tone issue with those too, >_<

  5. Totally in love with the Tarte BB cream. It covers better than foundation and is still very light. I highly recommend it!

  6. Hey guys- A lot of readers have been questioning CC creams vs BB creams and I will be covering that next Sunday so stay tuned :) Thanks for all the feedback it’s so great to hear everyone’s opinions on what works and doesn’t work for them! xo

  7. I’ve been getting into BB cream too – so far really liking it! There are so many, I just would like to put it out there to try to find one that is cruelty free – Brands like Garnier and L’Oreal are not. There’s lots to choose from! You can either read the labels, ask staff or just search the internet. Here is a link:

  8. I’m really liking Dr. Jart’s Detox BB Cream from Sephora. Actually, I went in and asked the girls there about BB cream and they gave me a few samples to try out since the ones they sell are upwards of $50. I think it’s perfect if you don’t like that heavy feel of foundation but still want to even out your skintone. It’s like a tinted moisturizer on steroids.

  9. I am a Cosmetic Manager in Canada, and I get asked at least a dozen times a day what a BB cream is. I always tell people it is an extension of your skincare. If you are making an investment in you skin by using cleansers and moisturizers, why would you want to slap a foundation on that does nothing for you. BB cream is skincare that evens out the tome of your skin, hydrates and preps your skin. There are many out there and not all are created equal. So beware a large amount of them at just tinted moisturizers.
If you live in Canada or can get there to shop for a day there are 2 BB creams that we have that you can not get in the states and they are the only ones I ever recommend because they are so much better then the ones listed above. Check out Marcelle BB in spf20 ($28 CAN), its anti-aging and protects, its the only one I have found that you can also use as your primer which is suppose to be one of the features of a BB. The other one just came out and its Biotherm BB ($36 CAN) it is so rich in moisture, refreshing and leaves your skin radiant. Check these out if you get a chance.

  10. My friend shared BB cream with me last summer. I had no idea what the heck it was, but she swore by it and told me I should at least use that (I typically wear only eye make up, if that even, because I was blessed with some kick ass skin genes). I picked up the L’Oreal one awhile ago and would wear it from time to time, but recently, I’ve been wearing it a lot more. I’m kind of obsessed now. My friend uses the Garnier brand and raves about it as well. So yay for BB cream!!

    • Yay! So glad to hear that one is working for you! Love BB creams! :)

  11. If you have fair skin, test the L’oreal BB cream before you buy it. Even the one specifically for light skin makes me look like someone rubbed fake tan all over my face.

    • I definitely agree and would say that is true for any BB. Some of them do have a warmer tone behind them so with a fair complexion I would shoot for a BB that has a good range of colors!

      Jennifer Walker | 5/26/2013 02:05 pm
    • I tried the Loreal one, the lightest shade they had and I was kind of having the opposite effect. It was practically solid white on my face.

    • Same! Love my skin tone, but wish it was easier to find fair make up.

  12. I’m incredibly satisfied with the Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream, I don’t really use make-up at all, so anything that feels caked on is out of the question. This cream is light, evens out my skin tone, and camouflages my blemishes. And it’s really cheap! http://www.target.com/p/maybelline-dream-fresh-bb-cream/-/A-14081984?ref=tgt_adv_XSG10001&AFID=Google_PLA_df&LNM=%7C14060989&CPNG=Health+Beauty&kpid=14060989&LID=PA&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=14060989

    • I need to try this one! I have heard mixed reviews about it but I must find out for myself :) Thanks so much Adani! xo

      • The Maybelline BB cream is great if you live in drier areas. I live in AZ and it is awesome. But when I visit the East Coast…..grease city. Thanks for the article! I had no idea there were so many brands out there!!!!

  13. Finally someone wrote this article! I’ve been staring at BB cream ads in my vogue for ages and my only thought was “what the hell is BB cream? Why should I try it?” Thanks for writing this article. It was very helpful. And now, I must go spend my money at Walgreens…

    • You and every other girl out there! Too funny and too true Paris! Let me know which one works best for you! xo

  14. I personally love BB creams! I use them instead of foundation (though sometimes I do use tinted moisturizers). But I typically prefer Korean BB Creams over any Western BB Cream, the korean brands are so much better for hydrating and coverage and a majority of the american brands are just sort of like tinted moisturizers.

    • Thanks so much for adding that about the geographical differences. I have heard the Korean BB’s are amazing as well!

  15. I really like BB creams, but here in my hometown, in Mexico,it’s kinda hard to find them, so i’m using the maybelline one, but I’m not so sure about it ’cause I feel like the product doesn’t last, and I don’t feel so happy about the range of tones, the dark it’s kinda too dark for me, and the medium too white. Besides in this hot spring I also feel like this bb cream vanishes very very very fast from my face…. and this is so sad…. but I might try with another one. I think I might find the loreal one or the one from garnier….

    • I didn’t like the Maybelline one either. Way too watery, so it just slid right off. But I moved on to the Garnier one and its MUCH better.

    • Hey Andrea! So sad to hear that the Maybelline BB isn’t working for you! I have not personally tested that one yet. You should definitely give another BB a chance though! Most should be awesome for those hot spring days especially with the SPF most of them contain! I would suggest the Loreal for you for sure! If you try it let me know how it works for you! xo

  16. Great article! Love bb cream!

  17. Thank you! I was feeling so out of the loop not knowing what this was….

    • You’re welcome Kate! You’re definitely not the only one who feels out of the loop, BUT hopefully you’re not anymore! :)
