Welcome back to Culture Crack, a personal weekly exercise in passing off my celebrity gossip addiction as dedicated research for informative reporting. Let’s get started.
It’s been a while since I’ve tackled “breaking news,” but I had to madly edit this post when every media outlet on the planet freaked out Friday morning over Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’s divorce announcement. People.com reported that the couple is parting ways after five years of marriage. “This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family,” Holmes’s attorney, Jonathan Wolfe, said. “Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.” Cruise and Holmes wed in an Italian castle in 2006 and have six-year-old daughter, Suri.
And three seconds after updating this post, more breaking news, well, broke: Adele is pregnant! The 24-year-old singer announced on her website Friday that she’s expecting her first child with boyfriend Simon Konecki. The Grammy winner and Konecki met last summer. Congrats!
Changing gears, this week was a rough one for anyone who’s ever been touched by Nora Ephron‘s work (which is just about everyone). The legendary multi-hyphenate (writer/director/producer/journalist/etc.) passed away Tuesday at the age of 71 following a battle with leukemia. A memorial service is scheduled for July 9.
Ann Curry officially announced her departure from the Today show Thursday. She told audiences, “This is not the way I expected to leave,” but expressed gratitude for her 15 years on the show. Curry’s new role will be NBC News National and International Correspondent/Anchor and Today Anchor at Large. The LA Times reports that the network’s chief legal analyst Savannah Guthrie is expected to replace Curry.
An unlikely pop culture quartet formed in Hollywood Wednesday night: Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and Robert Pattinson joined forces in support of Perry’s new film, Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D and boarded a party bus after the premiere.
Paula Deen graces the cover of People Magazine this week, celebrating her 30-pound weight loss. Deen was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes earlier this year and tells the magazine, “I do think differently now. I’m more aware. It took me a couple of years to get to this point. If you make a few small changes, they can add up to big results.”
Megan Fox and husband Brian Austin Green stepped out in Hawaii this week to celebrate their second wedding anniversary, and Fox sported an impressive baby bump. The couple have yet to officially announce the pregnancy news.
In other baby news, Reese Witherspoon did reportedly confirm that she’s expecting. The actress told the crowd at a Chicago event, “I’m very excited … Frankly, I’m feeling very round tonight.”
One more pregnancy story? Okay. Dixie Chicks’ Emily Robison announced she’s expecting her fourth child. This is Robison’s first child with boyfriend Martin Strayer and she’s due in early September.
Moving on from baby news, Fiona Apple released her first album in seven years on Tuesday. “The Idler Wheel is Wiser” debuted on the Billboard 200 at number 3. The last time Apple was on the chart was in 2005 with “Extraordinary Machine,” which debuted and peaked at number 7.

So many babies coming up! Nice!
