WANNABETatti Ribeiro

Ask me, or like, any other girl who was a pre-teen in the ’90s to sing you any Spice Girl’s song and I (we) can. I know them all. I love them all. The Spice Girls taught me about girl power, so I will love them forever. My sister is 10 years younger than me but way smarter and way more advanced. So when I loved something, so did she, because we practically matured at the same rate. Wannabe is one of the Spice Girl’s biggest hits. Everyone knows the “I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna really, really, really wanna zigazig ha!” part of the song. Even  2-year-olds. I was watching old home videos with my family and found this one of my sister. She was about 2 or 3. I feel like she couldn’t really talk yet, but girlfriend could SING and rap and dance.

When we watched this, Lillie (my sister, the star) said, “This makes me wish I was still little.” She’s 11. But I get what she means. Home movies make you mad nostalgic. They also make you realize that you need to enjoy wherever you are in life because you’ll never be there again. So enjoy everything and especially enjoy this video of her trying to sing along with Posh, Sporty, Baby, Ginger & Scary Spice.

Spice up your life!!

  13. The Spice Girls phenomenon had a strong impact on me as a young adolescent. I thought it was tacky and had a difficult time understanding what “zig a zig ahh” meant, but one event will live down in my memory for the rest of my life. I was in a mall on the outskirts of Portland, Oregon and there was a Spice Girls lookalike contest going on. Many young girls participated, either as single members or as a group, and I was surprised to see a much older girl getting ready to go on stage. She seemed overly excited and not very dressed up for her role as Posh, but then I watched her performance unfold. She started dancing and lip-synching and then moved up to the judges’ table. At that moment she pulled down the top of her spaghetti-strap tank and flashed them her boobs (including pierced nipples!). She then ran off the stage after her practical joke and was tracked down and given a citation for public indecency. To me, that will always epitomize the Spice Girls’ movement.

  14. Oh, the Spice Girls… Good old times. I’m so grateful that I could grow up with them. Even nowadays, my friends and I get together to sing some of their songs.
