There were things we liked about fashion in the early 2000s — all-over prints and colored skinny jeans, for example — but there are other trends we’d prefer never to see again. Specifically? The “exposed thong” look, which made a return at Donatella Versace’s Versus runway show at London Fashion Week on Saturday.
Models we love, including star sisters Bella and Gigi Hadid, graced the Versace Versus catwalk, and the collection itself is all-around stellar — mostly black, heavily punk-rock, with just a few strategic pops of color — but the whale tail is just…not something we needed to revisit. Don’t we all have enough traumatic memories of sitting in class staring at the thong of the person in front of us?!
Victoria’s Secret model Stella Maxwell was the one to rock the look — certainly appropriate! — and her cropped fuzzy sweater was all kinds of fab. But that branded exposed thong took us aback for a minute there.
Surprisingly, though, this isn’t the first exposed thong we’ve seen out and about in the recent past. Urban Outfitters just collaborated with Juicy Couture to bring back the velour tracksuit (yes really, and you can get one right now) and tapped #girlboss photographer extraordinaire Petra Collins to shoot the campaign. In one of the ad images, singer/dancer Tinashe models a sweatsuit with a fully exposed thong — showcasing not one but two early 2000s trends in one snap.
If you love this look, we obviously think you should rock with it. That Versus thong looks pretty comfortable, tbh. But we’re going to hold off on sagging our pants *quite* that low!
