TRACK OF THE DAY: "Good Time"
Courtney Batzofin

Whenever “Call Me Maybe” comes up, I quickly fall into a sullen rage. The mere mention of those three words has the power to insert the song into my prefrontal cortex on a loop that lasts at minimum three days. Cary Rae Jepsen may or may not have made a deal with the devil in exchange for a lifetime of catchy hooks and perfectly mussed bangs. The jury’s still out, but her new song “Good Time” is doing nothing to improve her case. It’s easy, breezy summer fare that makes me want to hop in a convertible and drive the PCH bopping my head with my impossibly cute posse. Check it:

  1. The thing that drives me crazy isn’t this or her previous hit song… it’s that I keep wondering why is it “crazy” for a girl to ask a boy if they can contact one another in the future? She isn’t even asking him on a date, much less, like, asking to marry him… neither of which really makes sense to me either. Why can’t girls ask boys on dates? Or to marry? And if they do, they risk being seen as “crazy,” and not in the fun-silly way it’s suggested in the song.

I think a lot of unnecessary drama (and rom-coms) in life are caused by boys being the only ones who can ask another person out on a date, or whatever. Our culture has successfully moved beyond dowries, or arranged marriages, or any engagements that are less than six months or longer than one year. Yet we all still go along with only-boys-ask-girls.

    And that really is crazy.

  2. I guess its okay–not really a carly fan–but I like owl city and they make this song pretty cool!

  3. This song is ok but it is better than call me maybe. I like Carly Rae Jepson a little more now.

  4. I haven’t heard this song before but call me maybe is really hard to get out of my head. Thanks for the share!
