After he picked up the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Limited Series for The Night Manager, Tom Hiddleston shared a touching story about Carrie Fisher while backstage, and it’s perfectly sums up why we loved her.
Speaking backstage in the press room following his win last night, Hiddleston was asked about the time he and Fisher attended a White House correspondents’ dinner together, and he had the greatest story to tell.
“Carrie Fisher was such a fighter. I spent one evening with her in Washington last summer at theat the White House Correspondents’ Dinner as a guest of The Guardian. She had this indomitable spirit that was bigger than the occasion,” he said. “She was such a force for life. If we can take anything, a lesson from her is to live as fully as we can, to embrace our weaknesses and that very act makes them become strengths.”
Hiddleston then recalled how Fisher asked him to watch over her beloved dog Gary’s favorite toy.
This is SO Carrie Fisher and we LOVE it.
“She was so funny,” Tom recalled. “She insisted that, when we were there, she was looking after her dog Gary and I was looking after Gary’s rubber duck.”
However, this being Carrie and Gary it wasn’t a normal rubber duck. No, Gary Fisher’s favorite toy was, of course, a rubber duck of Princess Leia!
“I felt that in the presence of the outgoing president of the United States, it was only appropriate to have a Princess Leia rubber duck in train because of Carrie’s contribution,” he finished.
