Tinselitis: It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas

Now that it’s officially November, all the grinches complaining that it’s not really the holiday season yet can take a hike because, guess what? It so is! As early as Halloween night, city workers in my neighbourhood were out on the street putting up those Christmas light displays that hang between telephone poles and power lines. See? Christmas! Plus, I’m starting to see Christmas-themed ads on TV and hear songs in the shops and I even caught some wrapping paper being set out yesterday. So there!

That being said, I think it’s time that we all start to stock up on those items which make the holidays that much better – from stockings to songs, here’s what you need to kick the Christmas season off right:

1. A giant stocking

Anyone worth their wassail (LOL) knows that stockings are where it’s at. You fill them with lots of little knick knacks and doo-dads (as my Nana would say) and they’re the first things you open before the main event. So if regular stockings are great, how much better is a giant one? I had one like this growing up, though mine was quilted and had a bear on it. Either way, nothing says awesome (and perhaps slightly greedy) like a 5 foot tall stocking.

2. Lights

Even if you don’t have a house to go overboard with, fairy lights have a place in every Christmas lover’s life – year round! I love stringing them around my bed or around the windows of my room. As Tim Gunn would say, “Make it work!”

3. A Santa hat

Guys, a Santa hat is just necessary. I wouldn’t think of showing my face on Christmas Eve (and the surrounding month… I mean week!) without one. Going with a classic look is fine, but why not get blinged out with something a little fancier, like the sequined number below? I just bought mine (in silver) this morning. And I’m wearing it as I type this.

4. Good tunes

I might be showing myself up a bit by admitting how much I adore the Michael Bublé Christmas album, but so what! It’s really, really good. I listened to it pretty much exclusively while I wrapped presents over the past few weeks (y’all know I like an early start), to the point where I would wake up with his version of ‘It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas’ in my head. Trust me, it’s good. Also good? Our own Zooey’s album with M. Ward, She & Him’s A Very She & Him Christmas.

5. Novelty socks

I tend to get a lot of stick for my love of seasonal novelty socks, but whatever. Sure, stockings are great for your wall/bedpost/mantlepiece, but Christmas socks let you carry the holiday with you all day long. I own roughly 4 pairs of various holiday socks, which is probably more like one complete pair since all socks go to sock heaven pretty quickly. Either way, these will add some holiday cheer.

What are some of your must-have holiday items? What gets you in the spirit?

There are only 5o days left before the big day! It’s coming up really, really quickly now. Christmaaaaaaaassss!!!

Nice list! I’m so excited for Christmas because it really is the most wonderful time of the year :) Can’t have Christmas without some classic, holiday movies. Some of my favorites are; Home Alone, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Story and Elf. I also love getting those popcorn tins with the three different types of popcorn and a cute Christmas design(there are always so many to choose from!) Of course picking out the perfect tree all bundled up in cozy attire with hot chocolate and candy cane in hand. I’m a fellow novelty sock lover. I have to buy every pair I see and seriously need a new dresser because of this addiction. Oh I could go on and on about this wonderful holiday and I think I already have.

Brilliant article! I loooove Christmas. I felt bad for getting excited so early, but why the heck should I?! ‘Tis the season of good cheer, why should I feel bad about that?! My favourite thing is the smell! Mulled wine, gingerbread, pine trees, cinnamon, mmmm..

I usually don’t start to think of Christmas till after my b’day at the end of November. I’m not even getting Christmas this year – I’ll be on a plane flying back from LA to Melbourne, but i hope to see lots of those Christmas lights in California when I’m there. Where I used to live, everyone would put up lights and for the two weeks before Christmas it would take like 10mins to get from the main road to my driveway when it normally took 30seconds because everyone would drive/walk around the estate looking at all the lights. I haven’t had Christmas at my new place before so I wonder if many people will ut up decorations.

By the way, another fa-lah-lah must are Celestial Seasonings holiday teas. They have a sugar cookie and a gingerbread flavor that are the most amazing things upon this be-tinseled earth.
And ya’ll would fit right into my Christmas spirited family. We’re already busting out the Michael Buble and crafting sparkley christmas decorations.

Party mix and sugar cookies are a must as is hot chocolate with whipped cream and sprinkles. Decorating the tree always gets me in the spirit, as does wrapping presents. Watching Christmas movies in this order- Meet Me In St. Louis, Home Alone 1 & 2, Elf, Charlie Brown, Christmas Story, Christmas Vacation and It’s A Wonderful Life. Christmas music is a constant in my car from Thanksgiving to Christmas. If people hang out with me and don’t feel the Christmas spirit, there’s something deeply wrong with them.

A must have for me is a Christmas candy dish FILLED with Christmas candy. 😀 I wear my Christmas pajama bottoms all year round, anyway.
