This Week, To Believe or Not Believe in the Zodiac?
Maria A Hernandez

I kind of believe in zodiac signs.

In fact, I have had in-depth conversations with my friends about why I think they might be real. I’m an adult (sort of) with a degree in Chemistry, and I think that there is some truth to my horoscope. It sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it?

Hear me out, though. Have you guys gone to look at the characteristics of X zodiac sign? I have…many times. It’s freakish how accurate they are. I can’t help but thinking to myself, “When did this person meet me?” It’s weird, and it might just be a coincidence that these Virgo characteristics just so happen to describe me. So obviously, the next step is to go check my siblings’ zodiac descriptions to get a better measure of their accuracy. It’s a vicious cycle wherein I try to convince myself that there’s no way that the day you were born has any bearing on your personality.

But, what if it does? I can’t help but wonder.

I’m not entirely sure that I believe in the monthly horoscopes that you get in the back of magazines. That might just be because I don’t understand what Venus going into Scorpio means, or whatever. The only thing that I do know is that Mercury going into retrograde is no good. Also, I forget what my monthly horoscope said immediately after reading it so I can’t compare what it said would happen to reality.

Hence, my uncertainty. On one hand, the Virgo characteristics that I’ve read are pretty accurate when it comes to describing me, but on the other, horoscopes aren’t reliable at all.

Also, I think that maybe the only reason that zodiac characteristics are correct is because if you wait long enough (and the Zodiac has been around a looooooong time) you’re going to get an average that just so happens to describe a good portion of the population born under that sign. Right?! Statistics, always there to help me logic my way out.

However, I do think that the Zodiac, and its resulting horoscopes, would be handy if we could treat it as scientific fact:

1. All you would have to do to avoid the badness that inevitably comes with life is look at your unlucky days. “Oh, looks like I can’t go to that party after all. What if I get sloppy drunk? Oh my God, no, how embarrassing. I am not risking that.”

2. Likewise, maybe winning the lottery would be easier with those lucky numbers.

3. Can you imagine how much easier it would be to get the overall picture of a person? “Ooooh…he’s a Scorpio, better be careful with that one. We are not compatible.

4. I might actually understand what, “Venus going into Scorpio” means.

Don’t think I’m crazy, I don’t actually put a lot of stock into my horoscope, but I am confused by how the picture painted of your typical Virgo is descriptive of me. Before you make up your mind about about zodiac signs, please, google your sign’s characteristics. Is there any truth to zodiac signs? What do you think?

  1. The thing with zodiac signs is that if you’re told “this is you” and then read a description, you’ll find yourself in that description. Maybe it says you’re adventurous – that could be you, right? Maybe you’re pensive – sure, every once in a while I think long and hard about stuff. Maybe you’re outgoing – yeah I like having friends. But wait, it says you’re shy – sure, in certain situations.

I am a Pisces and I WANT to believe that this is really me. But then I’ll read the descriptions for Virgo, Scorpio, Sagittarius or whatever and I’ll think well… that could be me.

If you look at all the descriptions, you can probably find yourself in most of them. If you REALLY want to check if it’s “real,” maybe get someone else to read off all the descriptions to you in a random order and select which one fits you best. If you get it right, maybe there’s something to it. ;)

  2. Zomg, I was in a bad point in my life last year, and stumbled upon Susan Miller’s site. Can I tell you how creepily accurate it was!? I was on the verge of divorce, and it actually said the same, and helped guide me and warn me about certain things. Her suggestions seriously worked and it cost me NOTHING. :-)

  3. VIRGOS 4 LYFE.

    This is fantastic, dear.

  4. I didn’t believe in any of this until I found out that Mercury went into retrograde right before I had to reschedule four missed flights in five days. Now I’m terrified of Mercury retrograding and never want to travel again.

  5. This is down to basic misinformation. Astrology is a well proven science, horoscopes in newspapers are generally an extremely broad overview. In order to depict what you are experiencing or perhaps direction, you would need to have your birth chart looked at. This relies on the planetary alignment down to the second of when you were born. So, if you’re reading horoscopes in the paper or compatibility based on zodiac signs alone, then you are going to get an incredibly varied answer. This is why everyone thinks it’s stupid and full of crap, when in fact it’s a science that has been studied for the longest time. Even Presidents, dignitaries have all had astrologers on staff to better help make decisions.

Having said that, I am also a virgo. There are always two personalities to every sign as well as a male and a female point I usually find. However, when it comes to knowing a broad overview of signs, it really helps in regards to certain aspects of your life. For instance, a relationship, a business relationship and circle of friends. It’s not to say that a fire sign can’t work with a water sign as the water sign would constantly be trying to put out the fire signs mess’ or that an earth sign can’t get a long with an air sign. It’s all down to each personal birth chart which any qualified astrologer can work out for you.

As for Venus in Scorpio…well we could be here all night. But the general gist is the planet of love and passion of Venus, and the intensely spiritual, sensitive water sign of Scorpio merge to create what can be a beautiful moment to in fact indulge. Depending on the houses, this could be relationships, career, travel etc. It means to give into moments wholly. Even if they are fleeting, perhaps everlasting. They do say that in a second of surrender is an eternity of delight.
