BEAUTY Thee Way Fashion: The Floral Maxi
Sara Zucker

Boy oh boy, today is the day you’ve been waiting for, the day that a new edition of Three Way Fashion comes to town. Sound the trumpets! Toot the horns! I know I’ve told you before, but if you don’t remember, the overall goal of this column is to show you how to snazz up a piece of clothing three very different ways. All pieces shown are priced at or way under $100 because I care about you and your wallet. No need to thank me.

  • Apt. 9 floral maxi dress, $64

Look #1: This is the perfect outfit for a Casual Friday at the office because, well, sometimes the A/C is cranked up way too high (overcompensation for the lack of overtime they’re not paying you, am I right?) and you really need an extra layer but it is hot as Hades outside. Choose a cardi in a shade within the color palette of the floral pattern of your dress to stay put-together without looking fussy. You’ll also be lugging around your laptop, some cosmetics to freshen up during the day, maybe a book or three – that’s what the large canvas tote is for.

  • Madewell cardigan, $40
  • Tilly’s canvas tote, $27
  • Connie sandals, $15

Look #2: Sometimes you just want to look chic without throwing on a whole mess of pieces. The easiest way to do so with that flower-covered maxi is to zip on a light-colored leather jacket – or faux, for you PETA members – and a pair of bright booties in a matching shade as the dress. Obviously, take the outerwear off if it gets too warm this season, but don’t start walking around barefoot because it didn’t work for Britney Spears and it sure as heck won’t work for you. No offense.

  • Arden B. faux leather jacket, $50
  • BCBGirls peep toe booties, $98

Look #3: You know all those way-too-cool-looking chicks who show up to the beach draped in some fancy shmancy caftan, an “it” bag and tons of bling? Imagine what all that tomfoolery must have cost let alone weigh; who wants to wear a lot of accessories in that heat? And imagine the tan lines! Regardless, if you do want to look glam on the sand, try an ultra-light straw hat and tote and keep jewelry relegated to a few bracelets that can be easily taken off and on depending on how swollen you get as the temperature rises. That’s just me? Never mind my cankles.

  • Tilly’s hat, $17
  • Forever21 bangles, $7
  • Aqua cuff, $30
  • Big Buddha straw tote, $90
  • Naughty Monkey sandals, $51
