My first trip to NYC a few years ago I stayed in Bushwick at the NY Loft Hostel which was 2 blocks from Roberta's because it was affordable and it was great. Super clean, nice people, and a cute area around it. It was pretty easy to get into the city and get around Brooklyn and so much less expensive than anywhere else.

In what world is the Meatpacking District downtown? Telling a tourist to go to Bushwick is a little ridiculous. For tours, I recommend http://www.bigonion.com/ They have a large variety that can cater to almost any interest. If it's nice out, go to the Highline. Probably cliche by now, but it really is awesome. Get ice cream at Lula's Sweet Apothecary. Watch random performers at Washington Square Park and eat from the Dosa cart there. Visit the major museums. If you need to stop to talk to each other or look at a map, move against a building instead of staying in the middle of the sidewalk. Use HopStop to navigate the subway. Don't be afraid to ask for directions; New Yorkers are nice and helpful, but not really interested in learning your life story- that doesn't make us rude! Find cool jewelry and purses at random shops in the East Village instead of hitting Broadway in Soho. Go into Tiffany & Co. - for some reason it makes you feel amazing. Get Dim Sum in Chinatown. Don't eat at any chain restaurant. Get Broadway rush tickets- so much cheaper!
