Brenda, Kelly and Donna. By the time you’re finished reading that, you should already have the Beverly Hills, 90210 theme song if your head. If you’re like me, you grew up watching and loving the ladies of the most popular zip code in America (and only other zip code I know besides my own). And if you’re like me, you can’t stop watching reality television these days. Well now, in a perfect storm, you can get the best of both worlds as all three stars of the classic teen drama are starring in their own reality shows.
Tori Spelling, aka Donna Martin Graduates, was the first of the starlets to start the trend. Beginning in 2006 with So NoTORIous on VH1, then taking it to Oxygen in 2007 with Tori & Dean: Inn Love, and later Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood and Tori & Dean: sTORIbook Weddings, Tori has been on our radar for years. One husband, three children, three books and six seasons later, Tori has continued to keep us in the loop of all things “Spelling”. So what’s next for Tori and TV? Reportedly a competition reality show which she will host entitled Craft Wars (guess extraTORInary Crafts was already taken?) on TLC, coming out this summer.
Shannen Doherty, aka the Original Beotch Brenda Walsh, recently debuted her latest reality show Shannen Says on WE, taking viewers with her on the journey to plan her wedding to third husband (if you don’t count Stewart Carson) Kurt Iswarienko. No stranger to reality television, Doherty already starred in Breaking Up with Shannen Doherty, which premiered on Oxygen in 2006. Due to lack of ratings, that show was cancelled after only one season. This time, though, Doherty has promised viewers that one season is all we will get of Shannen Says no matter what the ratings show. She claims this reality show is to guide women who are planning a wedding on their own. The couple has no plans to continue on as reality TV stars. With a reputation of less than graceful sendoffs, (allegedly fired from Beverly Hills, 90210, and later Charmed, cancelled after one season of her first reality attempt, and the first to get sent home on her season of Dancing With the Stars) a preemptive exit might just be the best way for Shannen to go out this time.
Jennie Garth, aka Kelly Taylor the Homewrecker Who I Still Want as a Best Friend, is taking her famed address from the hills to the countryside. Jennie’s show Jennie Garth: A Little Bit Country airs on CMT. Recently separated from her husband of 11 years, Peter Facinelli (aka Amanda Beckett’s ex-douchy bf on the classic Can’t Hardly Wait), she takes their three daughters to a farm in California to experience some good old fashioned country living. Having grown up in a rural town in Illinois herself, this will give Jennie’s girls a chance to see what life is like outside of LA. She seems to have maintained the most friendships with her former Bev Hills cast mates (many of them made cameos on my other fave J.Garth show What I Like About You), so this show has our best shot of a Luke Perry sighting. On the first episode Garth forced her assistant to milk a cow by sucking on its udder because she lost a bet. Such a pre-psych major Kelly Taylor move…Anyway, with the exception of the fifth season of Dancing With the Stars where she reached the semi-finals, this is Jennie’s first attempt at reality TV.
My love for all things Beverly Hills, 90210 is one of the main reasons I moved out to Los Angeles. These girls shaped who I am by the characters they brought to life on the ‘90s nighttime drama series. I can’t say exactly the same for their reality shows, but as a loyal fan I feel compelled to support them forever. So, if you are a loyal fan you will watch. Or at least turn the TV to their channel and time slot while you take a shower to throw them some ratings…
