I have fond memories of my mall rat days.
Wandering around with my friends all day, window shopping and (very rarely) actually buying things. How could it get any better? One of the best things about hanging out at the mall, was the mall food. I know this all too well because my first job was at the greasy Chinese food joint in the food court. Oh, baby. I’m fairly sure that coming home coated in a film of oil and smelling of cabbage, wasn’t hot. Not even a little.
The job had it’s perks, though. Such as, as much food as I could eat on my breaks, unlimited fortune cookies and of course the trades. If you’ve worked in a food court you probably know what I’m talking about. For those who didn’t have the opportunity of working at the fine dining establishments that the mall has to offer, I’m talking about trading food with the other restaurants in the ol’ court.
I had a friend that worked at Orange Julius and that was by far, my favorite thing to trade for. Those things are so darn good, man. I would always get the classic ‘Orange’ julius, not the smoothies or anything, because those are just not the same.
My mom actually always had a recipe to make a copycat ‘Orange Julius’ and after tasting it, I think it might be very difficult for most people to tell the difference between this one and the real thing!
I used freshly squeezed orange juice for this recipe but of course you can use store bought orange juice. You also may notice there is still quite a bit of sugar in the recipe, I did cut it down a bit by using the freshly squeezed juice, but you really can’t cut it down much more than that. It just doesn’t taste the same. Just think back to those days when you didn’t have to worry about your sugar intake.

Homemade Orange Julius:
Makes two glasses
Total Time: 5 minutes
- 1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
- 1/4 cup milk
- 3 tbsp sugar
- 1 1/2 cup ice
- 1 egg white
- 1 tsp vanilla
Add all ingredients in a blender and blend for 1-2 minutes until totally smooth and frothy. Pour into a chilled glass and garnish with an orange wedge. Serve immediately.
