Spectacle-Tacular: 5 Reasons I Like Girls With Glasses

I got my first pair of glasses when I was seven. Even then, I was concerned that people would call me a “nerd”. I chose a pair of thick round translucent red plastic frames. I was not a hipster; I was seven. Still, I only wore them when I absolutely had to. Looking at a faraway blackboard. Playing youth sports. I must have looked like my little league’s Elton John.

In seventh grade, disaster struck. I lost my glasses (now a pair of sleeker wire frames) for an entire month. I had to sit in the front of every class. I squinted all day. I did, however, finally have an excuse for my poor little league performance. When I found the misplaced glasses between couch cushions, I decided to make a change. From then on, I would wear them all day every day. I was going to be that guy.

Since then, I’ve felt a special bond with other bespectacled folks. I make friends with them faster. I imagine we have common interests like… I don’t know… books, maybe? I also find myself developing crushes on girls with glasses at an alarming pace.

It can’t be a coincidence that at the same time I was making my transition to full time four-eyes, the movie She’s All That hit the theaters. We all remember She’s All That, right? Fairy god-bro Freddie Prinze Jr turns undeniable cutie Rachel Leigh Cook from a pretty, quirky artist to a pretty, bland prom queen. The transformation culminates, as they often do, when she takes off her glasses and lets her hair down. I couldn’t have been the only guy watching and thinking: “Keep them on!”

I’ve thought about this topic for a while and I’ve come up with the top five reasons I like girls with glasses:

1. They Seem Brainier
No, it doesn’t quite make sense why people with glasses seems smarter. It’s the same as how people with mustaches seem creepier and people with Tapout shirts seem douchier. But a lady with spectacles seems like she’s got things on her mind. Like you can talk to her without hearing about a Kardashian. Plenty of women without glasses are smart too, obviously, but you have to talk to them to figure it out and sometimes I’m shy!

2. They’re Less Image Conscious
Well, this might not be true. There are actually two options: a. They don’t stress out about their image. Or b. They like the “nerd” look. Either way… great!

3. Tina Fey
She kind of blew the lid off of this phenomenon, guys. She’s smart, she’s funny, she’s pretty. Jennifer Aniston’s haircut from friends got so popular that “The Rachel” style became a national trend. I’m seeing the same thing with medium length brown hair and cats eye frames. I call it “The Tina”. Mostly to myself.

4. It’s Visually Appealing

Right? I mean, I am a straight male person, so I don’t always notice accessories. I can’t tell if boots and purses match. I’m not big into jewelry. But glasses put a big, obvious accessory right in your face. It’s the visual equivalent of: “My eyes are up here!”

5. They Can Always Take Them Off
Okay, Freddie Prinze Jr, I give in. It’s kind of sexy when a girl takes off her glasses. It’s like her face is telling you a secret. Or something less awkward-sounding and more sexy-sounding. Variety is the spice of life, they say. And most women don’t carry around a pair of non-prescription lenses just to mix it up. But anyone with glasses on can always take them off, and it’s like a whole different face. Have I proven yet I don’t know how to say things are sexy? Just trust me. It’s great.

I couldn’t agree more ! There is this scene in Cloudy with a chance of meatballs that describes exactly what you’re saying here… And I love this scene as much as I hate the scene where RLC takes off her glasses !^^

  2. Thumb upThumb down

My first pair of glasses were the same red plastic frames :D I cried for 2 days when I lost them :( Now I have black wire frames that are too practical to be even remotely cool… But yay! Being bespectacled rocks! xD

You are so right, Josh! I love number 4, especially. I’ve always had a thing for glasses. Take Mary McDonnell in Battlestar Galactica. I melt every time she comes on screen, and especially when she takes her glasses off because it’s usually for a dramatic reason. And you can see her facial reactions better. That’s another thing. There’s some mystery behind those glasses. Take them off and there’s some less mystery. I could go on and on, but ladies with glasses is a turn on. I don’t even care if they’re fake.

could not agree more… I’ve been waering glasses since I was 8 years old and I always loved it! In 2005 I’ve found the best frame for my face and I do feel sexier when I wear them.
Of course that I also felt wierd wearing them at age 8, but after a while, I got use to it and started thinking about it as an aceessory!
Guys with glasses are also way sexier than regular no pretty frames on guys.
    We rock!

i wear glasses and sometimes i feel like it takes away from my image. i’m so glad to hear that there are guys out there that like girls with glasses!! thanks for making my morning. :)

  6. Thumb upThumb down1

I second that “thanks for making my morning”. Josh, you rule, and I thank you.

Love this post and I am totally the same, guys with glasses are sexy with glasses !! I have had glasses since grade 3 and there were like a purple Harry Potter version that I didn’t love. But when I got my second pair of frames, I too fell in love with them and wear them all the time . P.S. they are Tina Fey glasses way before I even knew her :) I love them but I am now looking for another pair of some cool vintage cat-eye glasses. Thinking a mixture of Mad Men and Marilyn Monroe in How to Marry a Millonaire.

This seems like a good place to share my theory on why people who care glasses (myself include) seem smarter. Because most people are myopic, or near-sighted, and in order to realize that you have to be focusing on things close up. So, a book! If someone is reading enough to tell they are having trouble reading, GLASSES NERD!

  9. Thumb upThumb down1

This one guy wouldn’t go out with me because I wear glasses and are not image conscience. So I’m glad to hear that some guys do like the 4eyes ladies and natural looks. =D

  10. Thumb upThumb down2

I got LASIK recently, and it was one of the most bittersweet experiences of my life. The convenience of just being able to see whenever is something I wouldn’t trade for anything, of course. However my glasses had really become a part of me, and it really hurt to give them up. People said one of their favorite things about me was how I’d take my glasses off when i was thinking, or push them up my nose when I was making a point. That’s all over now. They’re sitting in my drawer and I’m sad. But I can see. Hm.

  11. Thumb upThumb down

Well, thank you. This post makes me feel good. =) I have always wondered why taking off glasses automatically makes a girl “prettier” in movies and TV…

  12. Thumb upThumb down

Do girls feel the same way about guys?

  13. Thumb upThumb down

I love this post! And I, too, love guys with glasses!

I am having a blah morning and tada, instant pick-me-up! Thank you so much for this, Josh! This made me smile. :)

And yes, guys with glasses are cute. Just don’t don one for the image. I am kinda sick of that.

  16. Thumb upThumb down

as a girl who has refused to make the switch over to contacts, i love this post :)

  17. Thumb upThumb down

Great post and I love the list.

  18. Thumb upThumb down

Thanks, guys! I’m really glad this could be a day-brightener!

  19. Thumb upThumb down

I don’t wear glasses but my boyfriend does as well as my best friend. I really hate this whatever you call it society has that glasses mean nerdiness or unattractiveness. In movies the minutes someone loses the glasses its like whoa he or she is hot! Cause you couldn’t see their eyes before?? I completely agree that glasses can make a person very attractive.

  20. Thumb upThumb down

I love this post :) There’s not enough glasses love other there sometimes. People need to deal with the fact that I get to change a huge part of my face whenever I buy new glasses and non glasses people have to make do with the same old face all the time. Poor them.
