Also there's this, which I think everyone should at least attempt to do. I know, a whole month without movies etc. seems difficult, but people lived without them for hundreds of years so it doesn't really seem like that much to ask.

If SOPA/PIPPA did end up going through people would just find another way around the problem. I think there would be a second internet cooked up by the smarty pants' out there or something. But I'm definitely against them, even though I'm Canadian and can have no real input on the situation, they would effect everyone, not just the US, and so that definitely means I don't want them to pass.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that tons of people have been able to figure out how to make the internet work in their advantage, with a little effort the MPAA et al should be able to do that too.

Very much against it. It won't hit its target (piracy) but as said it will shut down legit and important sites. It gives the government an unhealthy amount of power over the internet. Not too mention that when sites like facebook, twitter etc will have to close down, a lot of jobs will be lost. A lot of revenue in advertising will be lost, which in turn will hurt those companies as well. The internet does a lot more to create jobs and profit than the entertainement industry. So violation of human rights, a less secure internet, a scary amount of power for the governement and threatening to make the economy even worse, all to stop copying (which will fail because hackers will be able to get around it) = So Not Worth It.

Like TV shows they need to find a way of making the internet profitable, they know how to get free advertising from the very sites they're threatening the existence of. See sites like Hulu are the perfect way to compete with piracy and take the wind out of their sails BUT they need to realize that the internet is a global community. Most of the pirated TV-shows are from fans all over the world who wanna keep up with their American friends and gush over shows (and who will watch in their own countries when it airs there and buy the DVD's) . So make sites like Hulu internationally available or even allow foreigners to buy the episodes on I-tunes. Same for movies and music, create Hulu-like sites, you'll be able to get the costs back out of advertising and you'll take the wind out of the sails of piracy. This is just one idea, sure it needs some investigating but the internet is not the enemy, partly it's their own outdated bussiness plans.
