We all have our guilty pleasures when we’re in the car on our way to work or wherever we have to go in the mornings. Mine is listening to “Ryan’s Roses” on KIIS FM in the morning after I drop Sunny off at school.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with this particular show, it’s AWESOME. It’s Ryan Seacrest having some female co-host call up men whose wives think they’re cheating on them and offering them a free flower delivery to anyone they want to send flowers to. All the husband has to do is tell the woman calling to whom he wants to send the flowers. EVERY time without fail, the guy says he wants to send flowers to someone other than his wife while the wife is silently waiting to get crazy on him and call him a bunch of explicit names on air while they get bleeped out. The crazy thing is that the show has been on the air for YEARS and yet no one seems to have caught on to this trick.
Last week I was running really late and I took Sunny to school half an hour later than I normally do. It just so happens that “Ryan’s Roses” was on and I found myself drifting off and listening while Sunny seemed busy playing with her show and tell toy.
Sunny clearly doesn’t understand the concept of cheating but what she did understand that day is that whoever the guy was on the show, he made “Veronica” very unhappy. A woman named Veronica came on “Ryan’s Roses” and said she wanted to call her husband as she had found a second cell phone and didn’t know why her husband needed two phones. No surprise here – Ryan called and the husband said he wanted to send flowers to someone other than Veronica. Veronica then sat on the phone and cried and cried and said she couldn’t believe he could do something like this to her.
It just so happens that Sunny has a teacher at her pre-school named Veronica. Unbeknownst to me, after hearing what “Veronica’s” husband had done to her, she couldn’t wait to get to school and console her. The minute Sunny got to school she ran up to Veronica and yelled in front of everyone, “Why did your husband send flowers to that lady that wasn’t you? Are you okay? I heard you crying, I’m so sorry. Are you okay, Veronica?”
Veronica and the other preschool teachers just sat there in shock, not really knowing what to do or say. Apparently, as it turned out, Veronica had just gotten a divorce in real life. Can you say awkward? I quickly had to explain in quiet shame that we had just been listening to “Ryan’s Roses”. Veronica looked relieved and I walked away thinking maybe it was time to go back to Sunny’s friend’s birthday mixes in the mornings.
