Rowan Blanchard continues to be brilliant, shuts down sexist question about teen diet tips

Is there anything more satisfying that a teen girl putting sexist adults in their place? Rowan Blanchard, star of Girl Meets World and 13-year-old genius, was on the red carpet when she got asked a super uncomfortable question. Did she have any dieting tips for teen girls?

This question is out of line for so many reasons, and Blanchard pointed out all of them when she spoke to ELLE.com about the ordeal. “Try and reverse that,” she said. “‘Do you have any dieting tips for other teenage boys?’ I mean, come on.”

No really, come on. How many times do we have to talk about how these kinds of questions are invasive and wrong before they stop being asked? Especially for teen girls, who we already know are going through a dramatic time both physically and emotionally when it comes to their developing bodies.

Blanchard continues, highlighting what’s truly disturbing about this issue:

It’s inappropriate on so many levels. That makes other girls hate themselves or have eating disorders. We have to change all this. Girls tweeted me after [the] Christopher Kane [fashion show] being like, “Rowan, I liked the clothes, but all the models were this one way.” And I have to be like, “You don’t have to be that one way! You be you.” And again, I’m 13. The designer, the fashion industry — you’re the adults, the ones who can be telling girls, “You don’t have to be one way.” Magazines are starting to address it, which is smart. But we can all do more. I thought we’d see more plus-size models on the runway this season. We didn’t. That was a disappointment.

Luckily, she’s just getting started. Blanchard has an entire career ahead of her, and hopefully she won’t spend all of it dodging sexist questions. Not likely, since after reading her response, I don’t think any red carpet interviewer would be brave enough to make the mistake again.

However, Blanchard did have one piece of advice when it comes to food: “If you don’t order fries, you’ll probably be mad.” Truer words have never been spoken.
