Ron Weasley Has A Cousin?Samantha Kirschberg

Just  kidding. I mean he may have a cousin, but I never read the books. I have seen the movies and his family seems pretty big. Okay, well, Ed Sheeran really isn’t his cousin -  they are both just popular redheaded Brits. Rupert Grint, who played Ron Weasley, actually starred in Ed’s ‘Lego House’ music video.

Adele, One Direction, Ellie Goulding, and Ed Sheeran are just some of the UK artists topping the music charts. The 21-year-old seems to be the next Brit to break out in the United States. His record breaking UK record “+” (yup, that’s the record’s name) is set to be released in the US on June 12th.

You can compare his laid-back style to James Morrison, Jason Mraz and Matt Nathanson. On tracks, like ‘U.N.I.’, Ed mixes together folk rock and hip-hop hooks. I guess he’s an acoustic guitar playing, folk rock singing, British rapper. In 2009, the singer-songwriter played over 300 shows in one year. He was building his fan base and had read that James Morrison played 200 shows in one year and wanted to beat his number. At this year’s Brit Awards, Ed tied Adele with most wins (Whoa, who ties with Adele!?) by taking home the awards for British Breakthrough Act and British Solo Male Artist.

Ed’s songs have been featured in television shows like Cougar Town - in the super cute scene where Grayson proposes to Jules. And if you were saying to yourself, “What’s that song?” after seeing the new Victoria’s Secret, that’s also Mr. Sheeran. If you’re a One Direction fan, you may know him as the guy who has a bromance with Harry Styles. He also wrote the song ‘Moments’ on One Direction’s Up All Night. The band’s avid followers and the band, themselves, have said that it’s their favorite song off the record.

I got a chance to have a quick chat with Ed while he was on tour. The top things I found out were:

  1. He met Rupert Grint through Tom Felton, who plays Draco Malfoy. He definitely wouldn’t mind playing a Weasley cousin if there was another Harry Potter film in the franchise. Rupert was the better co-star compared to the cat in the ‘Drunk’ video. “It was good. He was really professional.”
  2. He writes all of his music. And usually it’s a personal experience that inspires him to write the song.
  3. In 2010, he came to the U.S. and was discovered by Jamie Foxx and recorded at his house. “It was quite a random experience. It was very fun.”
  4. If you haven’t listened to Ed’s music yet, he would want you to listen to ‘The A-Team.’

You can catch Ed on tour with Snow Patrol and on Conan on May 8th.

Let me know what you guys think! And who is your favorite rising artist?
