I don’t watch sports. My husband is obsessed with hockey, basketball, football… you name it, he watches it. Personally, I couldn’t care less. I’ll watch a Lakers game here and there, but I don’t know what “finals” are. I can make an educated guess that they are the FINAL games of the season. Usually, that means my mother-in-law comes over and her and my husband argue over sushi about whatever teams they are rooting for that night as I sit and stare blankly at the TV screen while scrolling through Perez Hilton on my computer.
“Kobe is a Pig,” I overheard my mother-in-law as say as I soon as I was walked into the house.
“No!” Sunny cried hysterically. “He is not a pig I love him and I love the Lakers!”
If we’re going to be honest, Sunny has probably seen two Lakers games in her life and has no idea what Kobe Bryant looks like. She just hears Daddy yelling “Go Kobe!” and she gets to stay up way later than her bedtime when her dad lets her watch the games with him.
“Sunny, listen to me. The Lakers lost last week – that’s why we’re rooting for Oklahoma City against Miami tonight.”
“Well then, I’m rooting for Miami because I think YOUR favorite player is a pig,” Sunny replied.
“Sunny,” I interjected, “we don’t say those kinds of things or use that type of language.” I looked at my mother-in-law. “What’s going on, guys?”
Apparently Sunny and my mother-in-law were having an intense argument over the fact that Sunny was rooting for Miami during the NBA finals just to spite her grandma for calling Kobe a pig.
My mother-in-law just kept saying, “But the Lakers lost last week!” and Sunny kept repeating over and over again in a very calm tone, “Maybe in your head they lost, but in my mind, they totally won.”
My mother-in-law left during half time because Sunny was over-enthusiastically rooting for Miami while jumping up and down on our couch.
A few days later, Sunny asked to call her grandma. I thought,“How sweet, she wants to say hi.” We call and the first words out of her mouth were, “Hi. Oklahoma lost and the Lakers won.”
Gotta love that girl.
