Although we love love, there’s always a lesson love teaches us, and sometimes it’s not exactly what we’d hope it would be. Sadly, Nelly Furtado and husband Demacio Castellon have split, and our hearts are hurting for them. In an interview with ITV’s Loose Women, Nelly casually let it slip that she and Demacio split last summer. She simply said that she was “dealing with a breakup” over the summer. The two were married in 2008.
In the interview, the 38-year-old singer and songwriter talked about everything from self-care to how she coped with her emotions during the breakup. Music is a very personal craft, and for Furtado, it’s what helped her deal with this transitional period in her life.
In the Loose Women interview she says,
“I would sing to myself while I drove on these long drives and I thought to myself, ‘I’m so lucky that I can write songs because I can soothe myself with them.'”We love that creativity is a channel for Nelly, a way for her to process her emotions and get through the tough parts of life in a healthy way. And although we may not all be so musically inclined to be able to sing our own songs, Nelly also had a sweet anecdote for this.
Nelly said, “A friend told me that what they do is they just find a song that they connect with and that’s how it helps them!” We love that notion, and we can’t deny we’ve been there, using music as an emotional crutch until we can get back on our feet. The best part is that we can also listen to Nelly’s music whenever we need to connect to our heart, so we have her to thank as well.
