Teenage Wasteland MTV’s ‘Awkward.’ Recap: Three's A Crowd (S02E03)
Mikaela Foster

You guys, I’m really sorry.

I apologize immensely.

I think…

I think I’m team Matty.

I know, I know. I was team Jake. In the last episode of “Awkward.”, though… I don’t know. Lets go over this.

The episode begins with a school assembly. Valerie, Jenna’s guidance counselor who thinks that Jenna is her best friend, is now Vice Principal. Valerie, in hopes of stopping the bullying that’s happening, creates a school-wide event called “Anti-Bully Awareness Week”. Valerie is explaining to the school that throughout the week, if she catches anyone bullying, then they have to wear a huge red “B” sticker and try and get sponsors for the 5k bully walk on Friday. Tamara and her choreo club perform a dance routine in… interesting outfits, and Sadie makes a comment about them showing off their honey pots. Which made me laugh. Really hard. Sadie receives a big “B” sticker, and when Tamara spots Ricky making out with another girl and completely spazzes out right in the middle of the routine, she receives one, too.

While this is all happening, Matty is totally being the third wheel. Jenna’s trying to spend time with Jake alone, but Matty is well determined to sabotage Janna’s relationship. He does this throughout the episode and that is one of the many reasons why I have converted from Jakeism to Mattyism.

Matty invites Jenna and Jake for lunch outside campus. Jenna’s freaking out because she really doesn’t want to go and is really mad that Matty keeps tagging along, so she talks to Tamara (who is still wearing her blue unitard outfit thing… and also sporting a cameltoe that she’s not ashamed of). Tamara tells her that she’s being way too clingy with Jake and feels like Jenna’s being mean to Matty.

While Jenna is pondering over this, her, Jake, and Matty are out for lunch. Matty is obviously trying to get between them. After lunch, while playing video games, he even takes off his shirt (THANK YOU, WHOEVER PUT THAT IN THE SCRIPT).

I think the reason why I ship Jenna and Matty so much after this episode is not because of Matty’s absolute adorableness or the fact that Jenna seemed 10x happier when she was with him, but because it’s obvious that he’s fighting for her. He’s doing it in an annoying way, but I feel like if the positions were reversed then Jake would just gloomily stare at Matty and Jenna from a distance, and not fight for her at all. It doesn’t seem like something Jake’s character would do. IF Matty and Jenna get back together, though, I think that Matty should have to make up to Jenna for being an assh**e. He was such an assh**e.

I’m sorry. I’m going off about Jake and Matty and Jenna. SO MANY FEELS. If you have or have not noticed, I completely think that “Awkward.” is real life. I believe that I am a (13-year-old) freshman who spies on a group of people and writes about them on a blog creepily. I in no way believe that “Awkward.” is a TV show. I think that these characters are real people. Am I weird???????????????

Sorry.

Things for Jenna at home aren’t too great, either. Her Dad, Kevin, has been staying at work late because he’s trying to avoid Lacey, and while deep down Lacey knows that he’s avoiding her, she won’t admit it to herself. Excuses and excuses. Jenna isn’t buying it. What’s Lacey’s plan to get Kevin back into her loving arms? Simple! Buy a hot tub. Lacey reveals that she thinks if she gets Kevin in there, with them just wearing swimsuits… He’ll be forgiving. He’s not.

The same night, Jenna has invited Jake over for a movie but Lacey insists that they use the hot tub. What great parenting skills. Jake comes over and (unfortunately/fortunately???) brings Matty, too. It wasn’t Jake’s idea. So it’s Matty, Jake and Jenna in the hot tub together! That’s SO fun, totally not awkward!! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. No. Kevin totally breaks the ice by jumping in with them. And peeing. Jake and Matty pretty much ran out the door.

Jenna and Tamara have totally agreed that Matty’s is trying to get between Jenna and Jake. Tamara, who has gotten tons of sponsors because she’s gotten everyone who hates Ricky to sign the list, has been busted by Valerie. She doesn’t get in any trouble though, because all Valerie says is, “Do you know how exhausting suspension paperwork is??” and walks away. Typical Valerie. You know, I feel like the only real adult figure who’s actually responsible on “Awkward.” is Kevin. Unfortunately, KEVIN LEAVES. He moves in with his Mom. I can’t believe it… who will we have NOW to steer Jenna into the right direction???

Sadie told Jenna that she has to fight dirty, and surprisingly, Jenna believes her. To fight dirty against Matty, Jenna has only one thing she can use: PDA. Jenna is purposely being clingy to Jake so that Matty will feel uncomfortable, and it’s working. Jenna also talks to Matty, telling him to back off and stop tagging along, and Matty reveals that Jenna’s the one who’s actually tagging along. He says that she’s the one who’s getting between them, not him. Suddenly, the realization of this dawns over Jenna and she truly believes that it’s her fault (I DON’T).

Jenna apologizes to Matty about being the third wheel. Sadie later confronts him about trying to sabotage their relationship, and he gives her this face.

YEAH. NICE TRY, MATTY. WE ALL HAVE YOU FIGURED OUT.

Overall, I really liked this episode but I WISH THAT JENNA HAD TOLD JAKE THE TRUTH ABOUT HERSELF AND MATTY!! Ahhhh!! What do you think? Leave a comment or talk to me on my Twitter or Tumblr! Thanks for reading!

  1. I agree with Ahalya Ganesh! It’s the weirdest thing how I can’t seem to choose; I go from one team to the other all the time… and it’s even weirder how much I’m in love with this show.

  2. She totally needs to tell Jake about Matty. It’ll just be worse when he accidentally finds out!

  3. first I was team jake as well, because he’s much better for her.. or not.. Matty really makes an effort and he’s so cute and all! I think I’m team matty too. But I don’t want to be! Aaah I cant help it hahaha

  4. So addicted to this show. Though I still haven’t figured out what team I am on. Matty messed up and he only now realizes he did so because he can’t have Jenna. I didn’t see the sabotage as a good way for him to fight for her. I thought it was more immature and petty. If he really wanted her back he would talk to her seriously about it, not tell her he messed up and to come meet him at midnight on NYE.
It will be interesting to see what happens the rest of the season between the 3 of them. And hopefully Kevin will be back to help keep Jenna on track, though I don’t think she would veer off track too much with just her mom around.
