Teenage Wasteland MTV’S ‘AWKWARD.’ RECAP: ARE YOU THERE, GOD? IT'S ME, JENNA. (S02E04)

CHUURRCCHHH CAMPPPP!!!!!

That was the theme of this week’s episode of Awkward. Church camp. I’ve only been once. If any of you didn’t know this, I used to live in Nashville, TN, home of religious people. Although my family isn’t religious (but I have been to church once with a friend and there were SO MANY DONUTS), my Mom thought it would be a good idea to send my sister and I to a religious YMCA camp. I’m not over-exaggerating in the slightest when I say that we sang God songs ALL DAY during camp. We sang songs about God 24/7. Not that I have a problem with religion, but it was totally overkill. We sang before going in the pool, before eating, during the bus ride home… Surprisingly, I never went back to Camp Widjiwagan!

At the beginning of this episode, Jenna thinks that she should get a clear head, considering the fact that her Dad just left her and her mom. How will she do this exactly? CHURCH CAMP! Lissa introduced the idea of going to the church retreat to Jenna while they were at church, with her intentions being her and Jenna becoming BFFS. Jenna thinks it’s a good idea, and decides to go. Tamara is facing problems of her own, too. Jenna’s “stalker” has apparently moved on to Tamara, making shirts and a Facebook group called “Take It Outside”, which is what Tamara told Ricky when she found him making out with another girl. (THIS EPISODE!)

Matty is super depressed about Jenna, still. Jake’s trying to help him by introducing him to other girls, but that’s not working. Jake asks Jenna for her point of view – for example, if she thinks that this girl that Matty’s so caught up in is a bitch and that she betrayed him. She agrees, with Matty opposing. ARRRRGGHHHH!!! Why can’t they just tell Matty the truth now?! He totally deserves to know. I’m also 95% Team Matty now. Ahh!

Now, Jenna is at the God Camp, and it’s turned into her worst nightmare…..

Sadie’s there.

Sadie is obviously trying to make Jenna’s life miserable at camp, but now that I think about it, that really hasn’t changed. Sadie tells Jenna to back off Lissa, claiming “Lissa is my friend, not yours!” Unfortunately for Sadie, though, Lissa doesn’t like her, and would rather be friends with Jenna. This makes Sadie really, really, REALLY pissed.

Jenna finds comfort from Clark, who played a small roll in season one. He too was tortured by Sadie; she outed him to everyone, and his advice to Jenna is what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. She’s not too convinced. He did change her mind about her wanting to leave, though!! Throughout the retreat, they become friends. YAY FOR FRIENDS!!

Lacey is obviously lonely, with Kevin gone and Jenna at church camp. She and Valerie end up bumping into each other at a bar, and talk for a really long time about everything! Lacey has a new confidence that she can do things without Kevin or Jenna after spending the night alone. With Valerie. Valerie definitely was not trying to hide the fact that she was into Kevin, which made me laugh.

Back at church camp, Sadie is more angry than ever, and is taking every opportunity she can to embarrass Jenna. Sadie confronts her about her misinterpreted suicide attempt. Everyone tells her that she better confess to her sins or God won’t forgive her (thank you, church camp) and she refuses! Yay for standing up for yourself, Jenna! After, Lissa apologizes to Jenna and they hug!! YAY FOR FRIENDS!!

At the end of the episode, Tamara confronts her stalker about the shirts and the Facebook groups. He tells her that “Take It Outside” isn’t actually about her, it’s a club for lonely kids who spend too much time on the computer. When seeing this, I thought to myself… wait a second.. DID THE WRITERS THINK OF THIS CLUB BASED ON ME? If I was a character in Awkward., I would no doubt be the president of the club. Matty apologizes to Jenna about Jake, and they make up and HUG!!!!!! I’M FANGIRLING SO HARD RIGHT NOW!! The fangirling stopped, though, when Matty ended the hug to say hi to this OTHER GIRL. THIS CANNOT HAPPEN!

  1. I really cannot believe you’re only 13. Your writing is so good! (:
I liked your recap. ^^ I like Matty a whole lot more than Jake. Sure, he made some mistakes in his relationship with Jenna, but he obviously really regrets those mistakes and he’s so sincere about still liking her. Or well…loving her.
I don’t even really understand why Jenna fell for Jake so quickly. And yeah, I don’t want Matty to meet another girl. I want him to somehow magically win Jenna over again. ><
