Mermaid Chic: The Fishtail Braid

Ok, so if you’re anything like me then you’re not blessed with having your own personal hair stylist at your beck and call 24/7. And any attempt at doing anything other than straight, curly or natural-looking hair by yourself just comes out plain wrong and ends up resembling a bird’s nest that even a bird would be ashamed to call home.

But have no fear, because there is a new hairstyle in town which is being paraded around by a tonne of celebs and shockingly enough is do-able by even those of us who panic at the words back combing, tonging and teasing (I mean, ‘teasing’, what does that even mean?!).

The hairstyle I am of course talking about is…..wait for it……..the fishtail braid. Yep, it may not sound all that alluring but trust me, it most definitely is. In fact, it’s allurable. I’m pretty sure that’s a word, right?

The fishtail braid has been around for ages and was supposedly popular with the ancient Egyptians which means there’s a good chance that Cleopatra herself may have favoured the hairstyle. Yep. Mind. Blown.

Not only does it look great, it’s easy and quick to do. Whether you’re in a rush for work in the morning or just want a fresh new look for a night out – let this be your new signature style. It’s sleek, it’s stylish and most importantly it makes me feel like a mermaid! Ariel who?!

Celebs such as Miley Cyrus, Kelly Osbourne and Dianna Agron have all been sporting this hairstyle lately and have done a pretty good job doing so. Well at least a good enough job to get me jumping on the bandwagon – so I, at least, consider that a job well done! High fives all round to Miley, Kelly and Dianna, we should totes hang out some time with our mermaid-esque hair!

The fishtail braid differs from the classic French braid in that instead of dividing your hair into three sections, you divide it into two. And if you ask me? Less sections means an easier life. Which is what we all want!

The best thing though is that you don’t need to be some kind of French braiding pro. Something which I am definitely not! In fact I gave up on French braiding a looooong time ago due to the constant knots I’d always manage to make in my hair. It was more of a torture session than a nice relaxing hair styling session. I am ashamed to say it would often involve many expletives rolling out of my mouth, expletives which I didn’t even know I knew! Suffice to say, I don’t think my parents enjoyed my attempts at French braiding either. No parent should have to hear their child shouting at their hair and calling it a ‘Stupid Head’ (Okay so I called it worse names than a ‘Stupid Head’ but I’m trying to keep this PG, ok?!).

Not once when I’ve been doing my fishtail braids have I sworn or shouted at my hair. In fact, I’d say my hair and I are on the best terms we’ve ever been on. So there you have it, the fishtail braid bringing you and your hair together, one strand at a time.

I hope I have persuaded you to try out the fishtail braid and if I haven’t, well, that’s your loss. Seriously though, go check it out. Now. As in right now. Why are you still reading this? Gooooooooo.

Check out some fishtail braid tutorials on YouTube and see for yourself how easy they are to do. You won’t be disappointed. I hope.
