So I don’t know why, but I’ve been thinking about The Torkelsons so much this week. Like, a lot. Maybe it’s the recent full moon that had me recalling my fond memories of this show. All I know is that I need to talk about this show. We all do.
The Torkelsons was about a family living in Oklahoma. The Dad left them. So it’s Millicent, the mom and her kids (in order of age): Dorothy Jane, Steven Floyd, Ruth Ann, Chuckie Lee and Mary Sue. Double names. The family loves a good double name and who can really argue with that? They also had this grandpa guy Wesley Hodges who lived in the basement. He was just a boarder they had to make a little side money. A little freaky, I’d say, but overall nice I guess.
Bottom line, Torkelsons were strapped for cash. Millicent did her best making the kids outfits from curtains and other found fabrics but times were still tough, leading to the occasional repossession of their household appliances.
While the family may have struggled financially, they certainly didn’t want for any sort of entertainment. The family is hilarious – hence why I thought this show was the ultimate. I literally, to this day, cannot look at the moon without thinking the phrase “Man in the moon…” which was, of course, Dorthy Jane’s favorite line. She found solace in speaking to the moon. While some of us foolishly have diaries to vent and record our secrets that anyone could find or read, Dorothy Jane knew she could trust that the man in the moon would never tell a soul. Why? because Dorothy Jane, there is no man “in” the moon. Sure, he might be on it, but more likely there is no one on the moon. Therefore, secrets are safe.
The Torkelsons also has a pretty amazing theme song by The Judds. I feel like it would be a really excellent theme song for Michele Bachmann’s campaign. Just saying – she’d definitely be into it. Strong American values.
I highly suggest going back through some of the episodes on YouTube. I’ve provided the first episode here for your enjoyment. Let me know if you have any favorite Torkelsons moments!
