Giggles and Glue Guns Make Your Own Candles for Mother's Day
Mr. Kate

This is a DIY tale of two sisters who set out to make their own candles for their mother on Mother’s Day…

The quirky sister made her candle using a mason jar, old candles and crayons…

The posh sister made her trio of aromatherapy candles using pure beeswax, essential oils and miniature flower pots…

Mother liked them well enough…

Then their scoundrel brother Winston came along with no gift except his love…

But Mother loved him anyway!!!! … Happy Mother’s Day!

Prep It:

Rainbow Crayon Mason Jar Candle:

  • Mason jar – buy vintage, online or at craft store
  • Old light colored wax candles
  • Spool of candle wicking from the crafts store
  • Some jumbo crayons in the colors of your choosing
  • Double boiler set-up: i used a pyrex measuring cup in a pot of boiling water

Mini Flower Pot Aromatherapy Candles:

  • Mini flower pots from the crafts store
  • Pre-made wicks with metal bases from the crafts store
  • Hot glue gun
  • Chunk of beeswax from the crafts store
  • Essential oil(s) of your choosing
  • Double boiler set-up: i used a pyrex measuring cup in a pot of boiling water

DO IT!:

Rainbow Crayon Mason Jar Candle:

  1. Fill your larger pot with water enough to surround your second vessel where you will put the wax – make sure the bottom of the wax melting vessel is not touching the bottom of the outer pot. You can use a ball of aluminum foil to raise it up off the bottom or if it has a handle, like the Pyrex measuring cup, hook that around the side of the pot.
  2. Melt your used candles in the double boiler.
  3. Cut a piece of candle wick the depth of your mason jar, plus a few inches – you can trim later.
  4. Once the wax is melted, pour it into the mason jar while holding the wick in the center with the other hand. Wait for it to cool enough before you let go of the wick so that it stays in place.
  5. Melt your crayon colors one by one in the double boiler and pour them into the mason jar creating layers of color. wait for each layer to cool before pouring in the next color so they don’t mix.
  6. Seal with a kiss and give to Mother!!

Mini Flower Pot Aromatherapy Candles:

  1. Cut a few chunks of beeswax off your block and melt them in the double boiler like step #1 above.
  2. Hot glue the metal base of your pre-made wick over the hole at the bottom of the flower pot.
  3. When your beeswax is fully melted, add 5 to 15 drops of aromatherapy oil – depending on how strong you’d like the scent.
  4. Pour your melted, scented wax into the flower pots.
  5. Maybe label each one with a cute vintage label or tie some raffia around the lip – dress it up a bit… Sister Two didn’t do this because she’s lazy.
  6. Then give to Mother and tell her to take a load off and light one up!!!
